In an orderly manner, wlth the trend neutral, the stock market yesterday started its week's operatlons and left the traders wlth an unblassed begln ning, so far as initlal sales could be taken as a basls of futuro transac tions. After the openlng had pro ceeded to a degree when the 11st was representatlve the market dlsplayed a hardening tendency and prices roae fractlonally. There was no real spirit to the trading beyond the ordlnary energy of movements resulting from spurts. The action seemed to be held in check, and whlle dlstinctly it was not a bear market, bulllshness waa more a matter of falth than of evi? dence. The market was decldedly un? der the influence of nervoua appre henslon resardlng money. Not that the tono of the call money market yesterday offered a aurface Indlca tlon unfavorable to moderate rates, but there was that feeling of uncer? talnty always Impossible to analyze and emphatieally unsatlsfactory. The news from the Balkans. aa published. was more assuring than otherwlse. Of course. the bourses of Europe were unsettled and lncllned to weakness and no special encouragement could be obtained from that quarter, so wlthout declslve news the market acted with the lndeclslon of a demure maiden trylng to choose between ac ceptlng an Invltation to a Sunday school plcnlc and a dance. Aalde from the war news and the money market posslblllty, the day contained much of a bullish character. Indua? trial reports were plentlful, giving every slde of a prosperous showing, and the rallroad r.turns were excel? lent. Trylng to flgure reasons for the perversity of market action ls llke attempting to dlagnose the temper mental changes ln people. Both aro as lnseparable, as a large percentage of the variatlons of the former ls due to the eccentrlcltles of the latter, and both are freakish, aa ln the lan? guage of one writer, "No one knoweth another's mind and few of us know our own." The changeab'enes.-- of the human mind constantly ln motion wlthout rhyme or reason and the foreed changes due to clrcumstances make a hard comblnation to reckon wlth, and the student faces a atlll harder problem when behlnd these phases of mentallty ln the stock mar? ket ls the flne Italian hand of manlpu latlon. Worklng out this complexity of the stock market produces an ap proximate course whlch at times ls apparent to the keen trader and brok er. The problem of flndlng the trend of prices by comparatlve perlodlcal recorda and movementa makes the Stock Exchange one of the most inter estlng schoola ln the world and af forda an endless eubject for study, as new baslo condltlona are formlng con tlnuously. In the late trading yester? day the market developed a weak tone and prices decllned moderately. vThlle sentiment was waverlng Juet at the close and quotatlons showed losses among the leading standard Issues, there were a few galns to give clos? ing prlcea an appearaaee of lrregu larlty, and enough support was e\*l denced to slgnlfy a good undertone, The volume of trading for the day wae much less than during any full day ln some tlme, and left tho Ktreet wlth everybody asklng: "What wlU the mar? ket do to-morrow?" Tbe Trlbune haa aelected tbe following flfteen rallroada and twelre Indnetrlals from the preeent leading llated atocks for a sperlal table of ovensges, to be pub? lished each day: Atrhlaon.
