to be a one-man affair, Ueutenant H**nry
H. Arnold of the army avlatlon corps to?
day won the Ciarence 11. Mackay trophy
cup, competed for thls year for the flrat
tlme and to be awarded yearly hy the
army to the avlator maklng the highest
mark ln a reconnaissance fUght.
Of the two others entered. Lieutenant
Mllllng, because of naus- i, was compelled
to return to hls startlng point soon after
golng aloft. whiie Lleutenant Klrtland
could not get hls machine lnto working
order.
Flfteen minutes before starting the con
testants were told that there was an ap
proachlng "esemy" somewhere in a trt
angle about ten miles away, the corners
of the trlangle brlng Kort Meyer, Alex
andria and Falls Church, Va.. In the hills
on the opposite side of tlie Potornac. In
forty-flve mlnutes Lleutenant Arnold was
back wlth full informatlon concerning the
