War in the Balkans Affects
Prices?Support Given.
The haunting fear of war in the Bal?
kans haa given place to actual hos
tilitiee. Aa usual the unexpected hap
pened, and dlplomacy dld not pre?
vent what Europe had dreaded for
many yeara Just what tho outcome
will be cannot yet be foretold, as news
at such long range and under such
I clrcumBtances must be**received wlth
I reserve and corroboration of details
| must be awalted. The bourses of Eu
jrope were senf_ttonally affected as a
natural consequence and Contlnental
I selling was continuous ln all the ln
' vestment centres, while Ixindon sent a
large volume of selling orders to the
New York market. The effect of real
! war in thls market was less compara
itively than the flrst scare, which oc
Icurred last week. Relatlvely few
j American securities are held ln the dis
! trlcts lmmediately affected by the Bal
. kan strtfe. so there waa only a mild
degree of uneasineas shown in market
movements on the New York Stock Ex?
change. The opening of the market
I yesterday was actlve, but prices were
, eomewhat lower. Selling waa not re?
markable; it was more of scattered
llquldation of smaller holdlngs, which
were purchased readlly by the stronger
interests. Sentimcnt among traders
lacked assurance, and tho tendency was
toward the downward trend. Stocks
that were offered included both the
standards and speclals, but the buycra
represented a good class, and after a
rald of prices near the second hour the
market began to show some recovery.
Around the noon hour war talk was
succeeded by government crop report
gossip, and Interest in what changes
l would be shown when the report ap
I peared absorbed the attentlon of the
I traders. In the early afternoon there
! was an lmprovement ln prices, and the
feeling expressed was that foreign sell
! ing was about concluded. In the
i selling during the periods of most pro
j nounced pressure there appeared to be
j a polnt at whlch ample support was
; glven, and from that polnt the market
I would reverse Its tendency. Unlted
| States Steel presented a supportlng
i price around 78, and though selling be
'< low that figure, the lower quotatlon
i was only a fleetlng one. Conspicuously
| strong. whlle the market ln general
] was sliding downward, was People's
Gas, whlch yesterday advanced above
Its record price of Tuesday. Had con
? dltlons been norm.il, or had assurances
[ of peace been cabled from abroad,
the appearance of the government's
1 splendld crop report probably would
I have been gTeeted wlth the strongest
I bull market of the year. The m
j portance of the present report to the
T'nited States ls that lt ls practically
final and that future calculatlons and
operatlons may largely be based on the
showing whlch the government makes
public. In addition to the unexpected
galn in tho indicated crop conditlon.
compared wlth last month, the steel
and iron reports of the day were bub
bllng wlth enthuslaam. The markct's
close reflected to some degree the ex?
cellent crop report, and pricea diBplayed
a hetter tone end there was a mod?
erate activity of movement. That the
Balkan situation is a dellcate one is
universally appreclated, and the near
future stock market's action very
largely wlll be governed by the newa
contalned ln the cable dlspatches of tho
progress of the conflict.
