The r?t mate for such plant is a liberr.l one, but is not announred. It is stated, however, that $20,000 a year will be needed ?o maintain it. An otld start has just been made in work that is to he ready to occupy home and schools. Nine boys reared Protestant?, three Catholics and three by brothers Ifl the Movement three into busim pother. They hir.p established a job printing plant, and an? doing ?good work. Ten thousand children go through 11,. Childr? ' ? ' annually, and oflcon ?l 'In- Big Brother Movement sstiiaste tk ira 1,009 boys in New York, chiefly in Manhattan, who have health and m?nd to cam sufficient to maintain themselves. The thing they need is a chance. The men who personally look after them do much,: but the need is not wholly filled for those in immediate want. Hence this home and school. (riven time and place to prepare such boys for them, it is not difficult to secure positions and enable boys to make their permanent way. About ten boys a week come to the j Movement n dire need. Yesterday j one boy came who said his father, a Mexican, had been murdered some time ago. He came to the states fairly well supplied with money, got away with all of it because nobody cautioned him, and because of lack of a coun? sellor. His chief concern yesterday -??t his clothes pressed, al? though he said he had eaten nothing since the day before. A Big Brother gave him a better perspective of his ? real needs. Another boy in yesterday's list said I his father turned him out of what | had passed for a home, that he slept e anywhere, and ate when somebody give him something to eat. This lat? ter was not often. A third had been! abandoned, so he said, by some travel-! lers a few weeks ago, and he could get nothing to do and less to eat. Another, Big Brother said he would take him in hand. It is feared that the Mexican! and the European wars may add great? ly to the number of boys applying. While there are far more boys than Big Brothers, and more of the latter are always needed, there are in New York not a few well known men who are caring for boys. These include Charles L. Inslee, C. Robert Langeti backer. J. Beaumont Spencer, William B. Osgood Field, John H. Prall, Peter G, ?ierrv Charles ?'. Auchincloss, P. C, Barnard, Luther H. Lewis, Robert L. Gerry, Francis ,L Danforth, George Gordon Battle, Charles A. '["aussi^, .1. Van Beuren Mitchell and Louis deF. Downer. Prominent leaders in the movement are Franklin C. Hoyt and Ernest K. Coulter. The Big Sisters, on the precise lines of the Big Brothers, have also some permanent plans in hand, although now in their third year only. In the summer a country farm is used, and larger facilities are needed in the city for winter woik. Among the active Big Bisters, who care for individual girls, are Mrs. Willard I). Straight, Mrs. William M. Kingsley, Mrs. ?harles Dana Gibson, Mrs. Daniel S. Lamont, Mrs. Willard Parker, jr., Mrs. Robert Bacon, jr., Mrs. Lewis Stuyvesant Chanler and Mrs. LeGrand Griswold.
