Stock prices displayed a firmer tone yesterday. On light trading the
tnajority of representative issues underwent substantial .overy. Cov?
ering of short comnritments was a contrihuting factor.
The better tone reflected in the movements of Unitcl States Steel
common stock had a favorable effect on other shares. Steel sold as high
ct 92 and closed fractionally up at 91. Announcement that the price at
which employes of the corporation will be permitted to subscribe for the
stock had been fixed at 92 was helpful.
Specialties were again active and in some cases sharp advances wei'e
recorded. American Snuff moved up 6 points, National Cloak and Suit
3 3-4, and Pressed Steel Car preferred 3.
? Oil stocks were iregular as a result of profit-taking sales. Shipping
shares did better with Mercantile Marine preferred offering better re
sistance to selling pressure.
Liberty Loan bonds opened slightly lower and then steadied with the
fourth 4 l-4s holding around 95, on active trading. The downward move?
ment in these issues was attributed to the intimation by Secretary of the
Treasury Glass that the impending loan will bear a higher rate of. interest.
Yesterday's Transactions in Listed Stocks
All stocks quoied dollars per share. Annual dividend rate, also in dollars
per share, is based on last regular payment. High and low prices of 1919
sre based only on transactions of 100 shares or more.
