Investment Information ln thia department The Tribune mill throw the light of such information as is at its command on the invest? ment problems of its readers. The utmost care is used in the compila tion and prescntation of such in? formation and we believe it to be de pendable. But we wish especially to emphasize to cur readers the fact that vew devclopments of auoh im portance as to grcatly change ihe status of a security are constantly taking place. Therefore, as a mattor of self-protection, the inveator should make it a point to keep in close touch with the affairs of the companie* whose securities he has purchased and with general development* bear ing upon the value of such securities. Constavt watchfulness is the best safeguurd the investor can possibly have. Questions of general interest to investors will be answered in this column, in uhich case only initials will be usi'd. Answer - The stock which you pur ] ehased on thc curb may be exchanged : for voting trust certificates at the | Guaranty Trust Company. These vot? ing trust certificates are then a good 1 delivery on the Xew York Stock Ex? change. Morton Petroleum sold at $5 a share at the time when speculation was more active than now. We know of nothing in the affairs of the com? pany to cause its decline, nor for that matter to. cause it to rise in price. ihere appears to be no statement of earnings. Answer?Although we are assured that the Johnstone Tire and Rubber Company has passed from the prospec tive into the productive stage, we do not recommend the purchase of the stock as an investment. Th'e company's plant is located at Logansport, Ind. Its output at the present time does not, it is said, justify dividends on the stock, which is being offered at $2.50 a share, or 2% times its par value. The government guar antce for this period is $18,631,184 iou may see by those figures that St i aul is not doing very well. Of course, thero is enough received from the government to pay dividends on the preferred stock, but- apparently the directors realize that to do so under present conditions would be most unwise. A radical change for the bet? ter must take place, or else St. Paul will find itself in a bad way. Con? structive legislatio* and increased freight rates will do mucTi, but we are not quite s'lre that all of St. Paul's troubles are due to government operation. fhe preferred stock is 7 per cent non-cumulative, and the last d'vidend on this issue was in Septem ber, 101/. if you are thinking of pur chas.ng som: ,ecurity which will ben? efit by .avoiable legislation, would it not bc better to consider some oi' the bonds oi the St. Paul road? Western Pacific Question-Will you please express an opinion as to the outlook for Western Pacific Railroad prcferred stock as an lnveatment? Answer--Western Pacific Railroad is not doing badly under government op erat,on. For 1918 the road showeti 5.38 per cent earned on the preferred stock, an.l the net after rentals for 1919 to November 1 is geater than for the like period in 1918. Too -much confi dence should net he placed in a road's , ability to earn well at present, for: there ,s eon.;idcrable diversion of traf hc, and where one road gains another I load sufrcrs. Lndoubtedly the reor gan.zat.on of the Western Paeilic was drastic onoujrn to give the road a chance to earn something for its stock- i holders, and we believe that if the i raiiroads are given constructive legis ation and labor does not become too great a factor in the .situation Western Paciftc would appear to have consid-' erable .speculative investment possi binties, Some Curb Stocks l..,rn""!irn n >';'\? 10?
