Recovery in Wheat
After Drop Caused
By Renewed Selling
The wheat market was ?gain con?
fronted by opposing factors in the
form of a bearish interpretation of the
commercial situation at large on the
one hand and large export operations
on the other. Early in the day there
appeared to be but little doing In the
export market and prices for contracts
experienced a decline of more than 4c
a bushel under renewed selling through
commission houses. Some of the sell?
ing was believed to be for Eastern ac?
count, but there was also a good de?
mand from exporters, and it later de- i
veloped that export operations bad
amounted to about 800,000 bushels. It
was also said that Monday's sales to I
Europe had been much larger than re- ;
forted at tha time, possibly amounting |
0 close to 3,000,000 bushels.
This demand caused a rally during the
afternoon and prices regained most of
the early loss, closing with net de?
cline! of Vs to ?ic. The slow response
to the heavy sales abroad waa again
a source of surprise to the trade, espe?
cially as some of the most prominent
export interests in the market express
?ery bullish views on the situation.
Part of the business for the day was
in Canadian wheat, but the Canadian
crop has not yet begun to move in
?olume, "as weather conditions have
been unfavorable.
Some authorities believe that the
market will yet experience increased
pressure from Canada and that the re- '
maining small surplus in the United
Stetes and the Canadian surplus will
be sufficient to supply Europe's needs
\ 'ntil the crops in the Southern hemi
Xi .ere are available early next year.
k%w?ih premiums were well maintained
ah? country offers were said to be
?mail.
In the local cash market No. 2 red
end No. 2 hard wheat were quoted
Corn Declines Again
Under Heavy Selling
The corn Market declined about 2
cents a bushel early in the day under
renewed aggressive selling by com?
mission houses prompted by continued
hoary receipts at primary points and
favorable weather for the new crop.
Tbere was some nervousness over de
velopmenta in the September position
at Chicago, although it was thought
that deliveries will b? large and that
a considerable amount of corn will be
delivered direct from cars on the track
Predictions of frost throughout most
?f tbe leading states west of the Mis
aissippi cause?! a little uneasiness, el
though it is believed that much of th<
erop is now beyond frost damage
Shorts covered on the decline, however
and late in the day the market wai
steadier, closing with net losses o
*4 to *4c. Stocks of Argentine con
in the local merket are large end en
meeting with a slow demana.
In the local cash market No. 2 yelloi
corn was quoted at 1.88 and No.
mixed at 1.37 c. i. f. New York t*

was said to have sold for export at 9

Pound Limit After
Irregular Changes
Violent Fluctuations in Fu?
tures Reflect Unsettled
Sentiment ; Efforts to
Cover Start Big Rally
Monday's sensational deciine was
followed by extremely Irregular anc
violent price movements in the cottor
market yesterday. Sentiment regard
ing thv-i more immediate course of thi
; market, at least, seemed to be bette:
l divided. Many traders felt that th<
, market was entitled to substantial re
1 coveries after such a prolonged and se
ver? decline, but there was evidentl;
a more or less genera! apprehensioi
' that rallies on the local technical po
sition would meet increased pressur
from the South, although reports tha
' farmers were holding seemed to b
more numerous during the doy. Flue
? tuations reflected these conflicting in
| fluences, hu* the reactionary force
I prevailed, taking the dav as a wholt
j and the close was 60 to 135 points ne
I higher. October contracts scored th
! maximum advance permitted for an
j one day, selling up from 23.45 to 25.4
! and closing at 25.00. The fluctuation
in the later months were less sensa
tional. At the best they showed a ne
advance of 140 to 160 and the clos
was at reactions of some 50 to 60 point
from the bent on the more active posi
tions.
The disposition to cover short cor
tracts or buy for a reaction was a fac
tor from the start. Probably it wa
promoted by n possibility that th
storm reported in the Gulf might reac
the belt and comparatively low privat
crop condition figures, and after oper
ing 7 to 30 points higher, activ
months sold some 65 to 116 points ni
higher during the middle of the mor?
ing. The greater part of this advanc
was lost durifig the late forenoon ui
der a renewal of Southern selling, ar
two or three months made new lo
records, but the covering continu?
and tho tone of the market chang?
suddenly during the noon hour own
to the development of strength in tl
October position.
Only six notices were reported, at
while tho near month was relative
easy on the early decline, shorts foui
few contracts for sale when they tri
to buy around midday. The result w
a sharp advance, which carried Decei
ber up to the maximum for the day ai
later months about 140 to 160 poin
net higher. There was a little mo
cotton for sale later and closing prie
snowed reaction? of about 50 to
points from the best, with the tone
the market barely steady.
Southern spot markets, as officia
reported, were 80 points higher to ?
points lower. Dallas reported a ra
of 80 points Bfter the sharp break
the previous day, quoting middling
22.75.
The local market for spot cotton .
quiet and unchanged at 26c for m
d?ng; sales nil.

the new note issue. If the company !
holds a meeting of stockholders to ,
approve the note issue, we suggest
that you attend and ask a few perti- |
nent questions about earnings and l
policies. That is your right as a stock- ;
holder. Speculating in foreign ex- I

sometimes, but it is a dangerous op- i

one is actually going abroad to spend

ffxchanging Livingston Oil Shares
Question?Kindly advla? me whether II
is ?dvisable to exchange my 100 shares of
Livingston Oil for the now one?, which I
understand had been ln*ued some time ago.
Ah a stockholder, should they not have
written me? Also what are the chances
of a dividend??E. R.
Answer? You should have been ad-I
vised by the company of the plan for ,
the consolidation and exchange of
stock. Now that the capital reorgani?
zation has gone through we see no
particular reason why you should not !
exchange your old stock for the ,
shares of the new Livingston Consoli- '
dated, We do not know what the :
chances for a dividend are.

director In the Intertype Company, to pur?

He sent me their 1919 ?tatement. An?
other friend. In charge of a composing
room, considers the Intertype a better ma
i chine than the Mergenthaler and thinks
favorably of their management since re
. organization. The third friend, a bank
' official, advise? against a purchase, but
1 think he may be too much influenced by
th? lack of a market. I can foresee no
situation where I would bn forced to sel!.
My maximum would be fifty shares, rep?
resenting approximately a year's savings.
I understan'l your dislike to advise on
sp?culative purchases, but I hope you may
j be Inclined to favor me. ? H. C. B.
Answer?We are inclined to agree
with your banker friend. You do not
say what class of stock you desire.
If you are planning to put your sav?
ings into common stock we would ad?
vise against it as an investment, not
that the company is not sound, but be?
cause common stocks a're sensitive to
earnings and so fluctuate widely in
price. Though you intend to hold the
stock indefinitely, nevertheless you
must consider its marketability. We
would suggest that you take a look
at some of the prime investment bonds
available in the market to-day at prices
which afford an unusually large income
return.
