Board** Tank Vessels Made
Profit of Millions in the
Operations of Last Year
More than a hundred tankers under
the American flap are now tied un,
chiefly ai a result of the attitude of
the Mexican ?rovornment on the oil
situation, although reduced demand
for fuel oil because of the shipping
depression and slackening of the for?
eign demand for oils are also factors.
Of the Shipping Board's fleet of
eighty-nine tank steamers, fifty-one
Sre now tie?! rip awaiting a renewal
of activity. Because of the export tax
on oil imposed by Mexico Air,?-?- ? an
interests have withdrawn from the
trade and little oil is moving out of
Mexico, what is being taken moving
coic-fly in r<r tish vessels.
The Shipping Board's tankers are
Isid up at Mobile, from which point
tfcey can readily be placed in the Gulf
trade with a revival of activity.
Million-Ton Fleet for Board
When the six tankers still under
? - iction are completed the Ship?
ping Board will have a fleet of ninety
rive oil carriers, aggregating nearly
a nuiiien deadweight tons.
The developments in Mexico have
come a: a time when the demand for
oil is a? Inw ebb. because of the
ltrfre stocks on hand. All the Ship?
ping Board stations throughout, the
wor I are well supplied, and the one
at Manila alone has stocks sufficient
for sixty days' upply.
Although the Shipping Board lost
heavily during the last fiscal year on
the operation of its cargo vessels, the
tanker fleet is reported to have shown
a profit for +he year of more than
$20.000.000. There was marked ac?
tivity in tanker service until within
the last few months, but oil-carrying
ratt^ are now only about a sixth of
what they were during last October
and November.
Many Tankers Building
In addition to the six -ankers build?
ing for the Shipping Board. American
shipyards have under construction ior
priv . interests fifty-eight vessels
d to carry oil, which aggregate
140,137 gross tons. This amount rep?
resents nearly 70 per cent of all the
tcr.r.age now under way in th? United
for private owners. (?rear.
Bri-ain has mor" than half a million
,rr ? tons of tankers now building.
The Standard Oil Company <
Jersey several months ago declared
that a marked surplus of tanker
nag?5 was bound to occur as the work
in hand was completed. Recently th ?
Shipping Board has sought to chart, r.
or sell a number of its tankers, biti
without success, although a coir.pa -a- :
tively few months ago it refused offers
to buy its tankers.
As an offset to the present rleprcs- .
sion in the oil trade, however, there is j
?o be taken into account the greatly |
increasing volume of shipping e.|uippe?l
to burn oil fuel, which will furnish a :
growing field for tanker activity. The
Leviathan furnishes a case in point. If
this 54,000-ton liner is reconditioned ;
ed to burn oil, as is expected, j
her bunkering capacity will be in ex- :
cess of 9.000 tons, and to supply her j
reds will require the constant exclu?
sive services of a large tanker.
Foreign Trade Notes
A special commercial agreement has
been concluded between Italy and the
United Kingdom whereby certain
?roods may be imported into Italy
without license formalities, whether
shipped from Great Britain or arriv?
ing in Italy in transit for Englar.d
from other countries of the British
Empire.
This ? nut of manila hemp
in the Philippines will be or.!y ?OO.000
hales, a little lese than 50 per cent of
normal construction, according to re?
ports to the Department of Commerce.
Poland has Tbegur. relaxing control
on trade and foodstuffs. After the
next harvest, it is stated, the Ministry
of Appro\ isation will be abolished.
Undressed hides and skins comprise :
one class of raw materials which show I
a hsavy decrease in both imports into
and re?xpoits from the United King?
dom.
