gamations, that ot Northern New England, in

The Erie Railroad, which at first ran only
bom Ftermont, on the Hudson Elver, to Erie
eatue Erie, has. after a series ot bankrupt
cies and reorganizations, become a continuous
line from Jersey City to Chicago. The Penn
srtvania Bailroad Company, which was orlgl
ciHt chartered in 1840 to build a railroad. 248

also, by construction, purchases and leases, ,ao
cdred a line extending from Jersey City to
Chicago with numerous branches, and another
from New York to Washington by the way of
Philadelphia and Baltimore. The Baltimore

sation, first ran only from Baltimore to Wheel
br. Ohio, but to it has since been added a
Inach from Baltimore to Washington, a con
isctlon between Baltimore and New York, and

the Potomac the Southern Hallway Company

the wrecks of a dozen or more little companies.

Chicago. Milwaukee and Bt. Paul, and the Chi
cago and Bock Island companies each succeed
