After considerable hnmmerlns: nnd In
dustrious circulation of unfavorable ad
vices reirnrdlni: the spot situation, together
with, I lie aid of several high crop estimates,
the bears succeeded yesterday In bringing
about a further reaction In tho cotton mnr
ket.andntonn time prices were forced down
fifty points below the high level reached
last Monday. Several tlrms of known
bearish proclivities sold on each llttlespurt,
and when the May option broke through
12 cents they redoubled their efforts and
succeeded In getting the market down to
the basis of 1 l.W for January. 11.87 for March
and 11.92 for Slay. There was a recovery
of five to six points before the close, with
a further advance on the curb.
For several days there have been ag
gressive efforts to bring about a reaction
In -cotton, but every time 'the market ap
proached the 12 cent level for May there
was a quick rebound and the bears nlade
little headway. Yesterday, however, they
were more successful. Nclll Uros. Issued
an estimate of 14,250.O0Oales, which was
considered rather bearish inasmuch as
It. Larmour Nelll of New Orleans, ho
Is a statistical associate of Ncill Bros.,
about two weeks ago Issued an estimate
if 13.070.000 bale. A' well known cotton
llrra of Hhroveport, La.. Issued nn estimate
of 14,500,000 ball. 'Ihee estimates were
out of line with tho recent tendency to
reduce Ideas concerning the yield and pro- j
moted more or less celling. j
In addition to this the market was literally
flooded with bearish messages from one
Southern spot market after another, nil
claiming that country merchants were long
of futures and spots and that a great deal
of cotton bought by merchants had lieen
held "open," or In other words, that It had
not been hedged by sales. When a mer
chant buys actual cotton in the South and
Mils futures against It it makes no differ
ence to him whether prices go up or down,
as his hedge sales me protection against any
decline in the actual. In such cases, how
ever, where the merchant buys cotton
and does not hedge It he is likely to get
nervous over a decline and make belated
iteHga sales on slumps. The claims c(f
speculation In Knots may or may not be true,
but at any rate such advices are always
received after a big advnnco and It is im
possible to tell accurately how much ex
aggeration there may be.
It must le admitted that notwithstanding
the firm attitude of Southern holders the
edge is off spot demand for the present, as
mills hae obtained a fair proportion of
.their requirements and are not'so keen about
buying around the present level. They
might not consider 12 cent cotton too high
for their needs, but tho fact of the matter
Is that such mills as tiso high grades are
lorced to pay premiums of n cont or more
a pound, and while the general option list
may be on a basis of 12 rents the spinner Is
paying 13 cents or more for Ids raw material.
It Is no more than natural therefore that
there should be something of a halt for the
time being until fresh bullish news causes a
resumption of the buying movement.
Futures closed steady, with prices 21 to
23 points lower. Estimated sales, 400,000

they would hand over this amount of
