After day. In which l!29 clinics. In
dudlnc fiOO operations and 400 demon
strations, occupied the attention of the
2,i00 rcKIRterert memners of the Clinical
('nnRrew of Surgeons of North America
nnn- In cession In this city, the grand
lallroom of the Waldorf-Astoria was
crowded last night to hear surgeons of
International fame speak.
Amoni; thepe and the first to speak
was Dr. Klchard It. Smith of Grand
Itaptdv. Mich., who.se study of the hu
man form, with an Idea to establishing
the modern Ideal, lends authority to his
statement that the Venus do Mllo stands
to-day as the typo of perfect womunly
form compared to which the average,
woman of tit-day Is Inferior.
Pr. Smith's subject wus "A Descrip
tion of the Knteroptotlc Woman." This
deals with the prolapse of the abdom
inal organs, among which arc Included
th ftomach, liver, spleen. Intestines
snd kidneys. In regard to this pro
lapse, nr sagging, of the organs, he
;Hld to the reporters that whereas cor
sets are not a direct cause of the con
dition, they may, particularly If the
corsets are "bad" or restricted at the
waist, aggravate the disease to a great
extent.
He added, however, that corsets have
nowhere, near the Injurious effect as
that with which popular belief has
accredited them.
W. Arbuthnot Lane. F. It. C. S.. of
Guy's Hospital, London, spoke upon
chronic Intestinal stasis, and said that
too many physicians make light of con
stipation. Internal cancer cannot de-
elop, he said, unless an Internal stasis
exists. He said again that man would
undoubtedly live longer If he had po
large bowel, but on the other hand he
opined that the majority of cases of
auto-Intoxication resulted from poison
absolved from the small Intestine.
Dr. Lane was greeted with prolonged
applause, and at the direction ot Dr.
Martin president of the congress, the.
audience arose and gave him three
cheers. They were called upon a sec
nnd time to arise and salute Dr. Lane's
wife, who was an occupant of one of
the boxes.
Dr. John C. Clark of Philadelphia
gave a summary of results of gastro
intestinal stasis, and Dr. Robert C.
Coffey of Portland. Ore., who Is the
originator of an operation for prolapse
of the abdominal organs whereby he
makes a hammock of living membrane
and swings the organs into their nor
mnl position, was the nest speaker.
He was followed by Dr. Joel E.
Coldthwait of lioaton, a specialist In
orthopedic surgery, who has developed
a system of exercise for the elevation of
the organs and the strengthening of the
supports.
The first clinic thus far to be held
by a woman surgeon was ,yesterday at
the New York Infirmary' for Women
by Dr. Mary D. Uushmore of Plalnfleld
Jf. J. She was the only woman thus
far asked to hold a clinic. She per
formed two abdominal operations on
women patients In which she was aa
slstcd by Dr. Wllhelmlna Itagland
Among .the women doctors present were
Alice Purnell of Philadelphia. Drs-Mac
Farland and Clarke of Philadelphia, and
Dr. Mary McLean of St. Louis.
A notable phase of a notable clinic
developed at Rockefeller Institue, where
Dr. Carrel was demonstrating tuture of
blood vessels yesterday. It Is possible
for but six physicians to attend at one
time one of Dr. Carrel's clinics, and ho
holds on an average Of but six clinics
dally.
In order that the whole number of
surgeons attending the congress may be
able to get the advantage of his work-
in methods, a moving picture machine,
the nrooerty of the institute, recorded
every detail of his clinic and if the Alms
are successful they will be shown to tho
congress to-night In the Academy of
Music at Brooklyn.
Dr. Carrel demonstrated the trans
plantation of blood vessels from ono
animal to another, the transplanted
vessels to take up the regular functions
of those removed.
Notable clinics of the day follow: Dr.
F. H. Albeo of Bellevuo transplanted a
foot bone which had been preserved in
cold storage to the head of n hip bone
of n living patent. Dr. Charles N.
Dowd of the Roosevelt Hospital re
moved a goitre from a child 4 years old.
Ordinarily golture does not develop at
least until maturity.
At the New York Hospital Dr. Will
iam A. Downes clipped an Intestine
from the stomach, whero It was closed
by an old ulcer, made an artificial open
