It has been at nny time In the last half

year with their ledKers showInK an ab
sence of speculation on the part of the
public and a satlBfactory condition In
ex cry way. Wall Street proper Is In n
sound nnd fortified position.
People downtown are naturally look
Inr forward with acute interest to the
decisions of the Siiprema t'ourt In the
Minnesota rate case and upon the appli
cation of the I'nlon Vaclfic. manage
ment for an outline of the terms of the
I'nlon Pacific-Southern Pacific dissolu
tion. The action of the court In these
cases may come at any time, and that
In the I'nlon Pacific matter will be
especially Important because It will
establish a precedent for the reorganiza
tion of all companies that may he dis
solved In the course of Government
lawsulta brought tinder the anll-trtist
act. It was thoiiKht that a full prec
edent of this sort had been established
already In the Northern Seoul Itles case,
and It Is still the opinion of the best
lawyers that the Supreme Court will
not sustain Attorney. Oneral Wicker
sham In the objections made by him to
a pro rata distribution of the Southern
Pacific slock held In the fnlon Pacific
treasury similar to that ordered by the
Supreme Court at the time of the breaK
up of the Northern Securities Company,
As to tariff revision it Is evident trut
leas and less uneasiness r belne; felt
about the matter, and as the days ko
on It Is becoming more and more plain
that only a moderate revision of the
tariff will or can take place. Un
doubtedly something of an unfavorable
impreaslon has been created In the
financial district by the recent utter
ances of President-elect Wilson, and
this Impression would have been
deepened hut fnr the general Inclination
to believe that what Mr. Wilson said
partook more nr less of the nature of
snphonmrlc rhetoric. Good natured
folk ate willing to allow a man In the
situation now occupied by Mr. Wilson,
that Is before he assumes the Presi
dency, considerable latitude In the way
of hlngut. In plto of Mr. Wilson's
various remarks, such a "We are a new
world struggling under old laws" and
"A new economic society has sprung
up and we must effect a new state of
adjustment" and so forth, most people
think that Mr. Wilson Ib a fairly level
headed Individual nnd that he will make
a conservative President
