with which Southern 1'actflc rose on a

of the situation created by the offerings of
Southern Pacific shares in behalf of the
fnlon Pacific had appeared to denote the
likelihood of improvement in the market
status of Southern Pacific stock, and no
great amount of stimulus was needed to
force heavy purchases. The understand

Presumably also the abrupt reversal of
form bv the Southern Pacific facilitated
the process of profit taking in Union Pa

especial strength elsewhere provided sup

of short commitments nnd the supply of
long stocks, but the position of the list
can be more easily determined In an
other clay or so.
Abroad the London securities market
displayed n fair ajnount of all around
strength and cheerfulness, although there
were no corresponding developments on
the Continent. The foreign feeling seems
to be that money will In another fortnight
or so become decidedly firmer, but the
Important question Is whether or not
hardening will be anything more than
seasonable. The effect of the Treasury
operations were shown In Wall Street In
more liberal offerings of time funds, but
without nny noteworthy relaxation In
rates. Foreign exchange was somewhat
heavy, but was affected more by com
modity bills than by any token that Eu
rope has been participating In the pur

"FIRST PRINCIPLES
Safety of principal and punctual
payment of interest are tho basin
principles of conservative invest
ment. Municipal bonds stand pre
eminent in these essentials.
All property owners know they
must pay taxes. This fact Rives
a legal municipal bond the maxi
mum of safety, as such public
obligations aro secured by a lien
against all taxable property, and
also by the faith and credit of tho
entire community issuing them.
We specialize in and ran
recommend tax exempt municipal
bonds, yielding 4. par cant.
