HEAVY PROFIT TAKING tt was another day of exuberant strength In the war stock, or rather cr-rtn lr war stock upon wlilch the spec ulative activity of the moment seems to have centred. In this, respect the Irreg ularity and unevennem of the trading was again marked. The market pro stilted a highly checkered appearance. In some quartern the rise continued In vigorous fashion : In others, the tone was uncertain. Heavy profit taking went op through out the day and In the lust half hour prices broke sharply under the lead of a sudden disappearance of the market In Crucible .Steel. This stock dropped 4 4 pofnts on sales of a few hundred shares and then shot up with equal rapidity to tt new high mark. The rest of the list reflected the natural apprehension aroused by this Incident, but quickly regained Its noise In a way that sug gested that possibly the momentary lit of weakness was the result of n bear attack. Total sales, although heavy. were somewhat less than In the pre ceding cession. tC4SUU4U14gnMdv4iesJuSk stirlce on a continuation of the broTuTTjuying movement recently under way. The new mark of 13 was reached. It Is Interesting to note, after an almost per pendicular advance from 67. Further siiectaOavar gains were made by Ilethle- hem Steel, General Motors and the westlnghouse shares, but the most sen sational Incident of the day was u vio lent uprush In Crucible Steel, which took the price through the recent high level of 83 and pushed It up to 89 be fore the close. While this was In prog ress, other Issues, which have been among the leaders of the war croup. such as lialdwln locomotive and Ameri can Can. remained quiet or even de veloped positive weakness, as In the case of Can. A good Inquiry for the railroad shares was again moted and the railway list closed slightly higher. Southern Pacific was conspicuously strung, the sttength here apparently btlng caused by the belief that the .full C per cent, distribution will lie paid when the direc tors meet next week to act upon the dividend. The renewed rise In Crucible was typical of previous upward movements In this slock from Its start some month ngo under the twenties, except perhup.s that the market was, at lenst in tho first few hours of business, more ordetly. The price was apparently marked tip with the greatest euso despite the tre mendous and rapid rise that had al ready taken place. Indicating a popular belief that the destiny of this company Is a brilliant one. Stories circulated of a combination be tween the llethlchem Steel and Crucible companies and the terms of exchange of the two stocks were put at three nf Crucible for one of liethlehem. No con firmation of these reports was obtain able, as" was the case on former occn slons when there were similar reports. Hut seemingly the speculative clenvnt has made up lis mind that something of the kind Is in the wind. Traders In Stock Kxchange circles are puzzled over the action of tho market, The professionals arc frankly bearlMi and nave lieen playing for n reaction for several days now. Many commis sion houses have nlso taken the stand that the movement has gone too fast aril too fur for the present and have ad vised their customers to take prol'.tH and await an opportunity to buy their slocks back cheaper. To the profes sional mind the tape shown clearly that distribution has been going on for some time. According to all of the usual methods of Judging the market posi tion, they assert, the speculative posi tion Is suph that not only u reaction but a moderate nrenk Is overdue. On the other hand, It Is pointed out that wlil'i; certain war stocks which have had vio lent upward movements this week -ire In a dangerous position, the speculative account generally may be better than It Is made out to be by hasty judgments. In a great many cases, probably a ma jority, prices nre well below the recent tops, suggesting nsslmllatlon. Many of the very active war stocks linve been nut of the reach of tho weaker class of traders, as the margins required have been raised generally. It haa been n matter of comment that the average commission house Is not parrying a henvy load or several Issues In which thre was a big speculative market a few weeks since. A good deal of stock litis been taken out of the market. Kven In the case of steel common the great activity may have represented to some extent a shifting of stock from one spec ulative Interest to another, rather than distribution In the usual sense of the term.
