11 Cornelius Vanderbilts Aurora Scores Another Victory Over Peter A. Rousss Winsome in Glorious Breeze THE SUN, FRIDAY, AUGUST 4, 1916. IROLITA 1KB THREE RACES IN N. Y. . C. CRUISE Uitte Schooner Bents Katrina and Outsails Flying Cloud and Elena. OKEE in. AND MILAM TAKE HISTORIC CUPS ftw Los-pon, Aug. . Starting In the HlhtMt of airs and finishing In a glorious hrMie that drove the racing; craft to the lino In splendid form, the cruising squad ron of the New York Yacht Club swept Into port to-night and cast anchor off tnt little station of the organization on th shore of the Thames. The eecond squadron run of the organ isation to this port was as brilliant and Intireatlnr as the one from Qlen Cove to Morris Cove on Wednesday. Certainly Commodore George F. Baker, Jr., and til fleet have been fortunate In the Ideal weather they have had so far. laterett to-day centred In the races mr the Navy Alumni challenge cup. That cupa are offered each year, one for loops and the other for sclioonrri. Again a little thirty footer captuted all honors for single mast vessels. I,. Gordon Hamersley's Okee 111., winner In th smallest class of the day, took one of th historic cups. The owner of the craft la now on the Mexican border with th Seventy-first Regiment. In the reg ular thirty foot division Okee III. beat Ad'.os for first prize by 1 minute and 1 Moral artlatl Takes a 2farr Ca. ft schooner cup was taken by Mlladl. th. property of George W. Scott,- winner la the regular F class. In the regular (lass Mlladl beat Amorllla by 8 minutes rt eaoondt, corrected time, for the prize. The victory of Mlladl was an excep tlonally popular one, as her owner Is ons of the old school of sailors who never tnlaa a New York Yacht Club cruise. The fleet was led Into port by Katour, one cf the big auxiliary schooners, the property of Kobert 12. Tod. As the craft hit not been measured. It Is not known whether she fits In for any of the prizes. Tin racing for the other division prizes was keen and Interesting. In the forty foot dais Malste beat Black Duck by 2 minutes 3 seconds. Cornelius V.'itulerbllt'a Aurora and Peter A. Bouss's Winsome had another good scrap, and again the Vanderbllt craft was the winner, taking first place by 4 minutes and 46 seconds. Among the fifty footers W. Earl Dodge's Samurl beat Oeorge Nichols's Carolina by 1 minute and 4 seconds for first prize. Three Victories (or Irollta. E. Walter Clarke of Philadelphia managed to do exceedingly well with bis small schooner Irollta. Not only did he win the regular class D prize, beating Katrina by 17 minutes and 25 aocondr, corrected time, but In a special rare Irollta beat Flying Cloud, an K clan schooner, by 5 minutes and 50 feendr. corrected time, and In another sjeclal class beat Morton F. Plant's Cen.i hv 7 minutes and 26 seconds, cor rected time. It was n typical Long Island Sound simmers nay wnrn v ummouore paurr a'lrr.alled the harbor start on the flag afclp Viking. The fleet then was lying within the breakwater at Morris Cove entrance to New Haven harbor. Al though the sky was overcast at morn ing colors when the fleet began to work IM way to the starting line off the east breakwater, the sun had eaten up the mitt and was pouring down on the dark green waters of the Sound. A gentle summer breeze was slowly wandering over the water from the southwest. It was only an August iphyr that hardly filled the sails of the handsome craft. There were banks of billowy clouds aloft, white as the sails of the racing yachts, and the weather wise skippers were of the opinion that thora would be plenty of wind when the tide turned early In the afternoon. Therefore they believed that there again would be some fine sport. Subsequent events proved that the yachtsmen were absolutely right. Wind Light at Slart. tn the light air and against the head tide, the various classes found It ex ceedingly hard to start. Although there waa a falling off In the screw driven squadron, the racing fleet wai practically the same as that which took part In the first run. Again the little fellows were the first away As they moved to the eastward, hugging the Connecticut short-, the schooner Elena slowly worked her way through the other craft. Carrying a small maintop mast, staysail and other windward can Ms. Elena passed Winsome a little after 1! o'clock and overtook Aurora and pused through her Ico at 12:30 P. M. The achts then were off the Thimble land. The wind kept wearing around Into Uis northeast. It came tn catpaws, and It headed the yachts the boats that r the greater distance from the shore j by far th better position, being '11 up to weather of the balance of the "nt The wind came from so many narters that any boat had the advan "fa until 1:30 P. M., when It settled nto the southwest and started to blow in a fresh and steady manner. At that fiour Winsome, which was well Inshore, ss seen to put over on the port tack nil stand out Into tho Bound. It was first yacht to break tacks during the run. She only stayed on the port tack W five minutes, tho hitch evidently be nz male to enable the craft to go to "lher of Falknera Island. Atlantic Cornea Into Her Oven. When the hrceze settled Into the south- B.in.H, Klena and Les Mona, three '1 the tlilrtliw, were well off shore. Han- " r.ad hen using a spinnaker as a "Jllooner She soon poked the pole out " 'larboard and set the sail In the cor tet manner The other thirties boon lolloped with their spinnakers. It then 1 5 At that hour the bl-t three misted Rehooner Atlantic, still the tall wider cf the fleet, carried away tier bal mner nnd had tn set a small Jib. Soon filer the freshening breeze helped At lantic wonderfully, and the old ocean r began to foot with the beat of tiiem By i o'clock the tide had turned, and Jye w'nd had grown strong enough to flck up tiny white caps all over the JPWkllng waters. It was an Ideal bressa JJr the big sloops and schooners, and '"y all laid down to their work In per- 1 racing style. By 2:30 P. M. the 'sdera becan to pass Cornfield light Jeel, and then for the next three-quarters of an hour yacht after yacht went 'o weather of the well known mark. Notwithstanding the late start, ths Mire fleet wait anchored rf the station W the club here' long before evening folors.
