Anderson Is Donor Mrs. Willard D. Straights Subscribes $75,000. Announcement of the perfection of a plan to raise an emergency fund of 11,000,000 for the visiting nurse service and other activities of the Henry Street Settlement was made yesterday by Kellx M, Warburr, chairman of tho finnncc committee. Nearly $600,000 has been subscribed. During the last year attention has been called frequently to the work of the nurse servlco and several large donations have been announced. It was not, however, until the fund had reached large proportions that It was definitely decided to set the (1,000,000 mark as n. goal. The fund Is being raised to meet extra demands on the settlement which the annual contributions for Its support are Insufficient to cover. Mrs. A. A. Anderson heads the list with a contribution of $100,000. Mrs. Willard D. Straight has subscribed $T5. 000, as huve the Misses Alice and Irene Lewlsohn. Contributions of $25,000 each have been received from Kellx M. War burg, Paul M. Warburg, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Latld, Alfred jlednshcliner. Anna M. Ilnrkness and lMwarit S. Harkneas. Subscribers of $10,000 each are Jacob II. Schirt (additional) and Miss Bourne. Leo Arnsteln haa given $7,0u0. The list of $5,000 contributors Includes Charles II. Crane, K. It. Cordley, Mrs. Helen' Hartley Jenkins, Charles and Camilla Altachul, George K. Baker, the Misses Edith and Kllc Borg. Mrs. IV Willis James, Col. and Mrs. T. Coleman du Pont, Mr. and Mts. Arthur Lehman. Herbert Lehman and Charles A. Wlmpf helmer. Home of the contributions are for amounts of less than $1. Fund Project Dlsenssril. Conditions arising as a result of the Infantile paralysis ep!d;mlc have In creased the labors of the settlement's nurses. Discussing the emergency fund project, Miss Lillian D. Wald. head resi dent, said latft night : "That epidemic Is now over and most of the children who suffered from the disease have been sent home from the hospitals. Nearly all are children of the poor, and If our nurses do not look after them nobody will. If the children do not receive proper care now a majority of them will be crippled for life anil eventually will become public charge". "As there are no agencies fitted to visit the children of Queens mid llleh. mond who arc tecoterliig from Infantile paralysis In their homes we have hud in extend our nursing service to thoe bor- I ougns. ur me 112 nurses on our start nine nre caring for paralysis cases only and wilt have visited about 2,000 oases, some of them many times. for our general visiting nurse sor vice, which coters everv ho.,,., f. ,i.. ........ tini-u iiosrcsi inose in nospi- tals. who number only about 10 per cent, of the total : the well to do. who can at- nurse you can realise what Hip scrvi of our ataff of trained nurses mean to the community. Small Fee System. "We try to hae ns few charity tin. tlents as possible, for It Is our purpose to maintain the dignity and Independence of all persons in our care. Sometimes i the fee our patients give is onlv five or ten cents, but it Is Interesting to note that last year we received nearly $S,000 In these small payments. Our nurses work under the direction of the physi cians who have their patients In charge. "Not all of the good our nurses do Is In visiting the sick. Many persons, espe cially women, cannot leave their homes without danger of destroying tho home Itself. By bringing to such cases the care they need the visiting nurses at once help the sick and strengthen the home, "From the Henry Street Settlement nursing service have grown many public health measures that are now recognlxed aa necessary In every community. School nursing, specialized work among tuber culosis patients by the Department of Health nnd rural nursing are only a few of our contributions to the community." Offlcera of the committee In charge of raising the emergency fund are Kelex M. Warburg, chairman ; Newconib Carlton, vice-chairman i Iseo Arnsteln, secretary, and V. Everlt Maey, treasurer.
