LANCASTER DAfLY 1ST ELLlGENCJfiH. TODNESDAY; JAyiLARY 3S, 1880: ,
WEDNESDAY EVENING, JAN. 28, 1880.
Scene at the Augusta Beem-Assimilation
or Discordant Elements.
An Augusta dispatcli says : The play
wrights are mLs-sing an opportunity. There
is the material for a popular comedy in this
city of Augusta. Act one, scene first,
should open in the dining room of the Au
gusta house, at the supper hour, when
hungry Republicans and Fusionists sit
down for their tea, toast and gossip.
A traveler from New Zealand would
never imagine that the capital of
Maine was the scene of a Mexican
muss. The tables are filled with the
Fusionist officials and legislators, who
elbow their Republican antagonists and
get them te "pass the sugar." The much
arrested Majer Folsom cats his steak with
the appetite of a man who never read of
drum head courts martial and the ringing
volley of a death fusilade. Jrusiemst
Governer Smith sits at the head of one of
the tables with his cheerful spouse and
daughter, two persons who fully recognize
his litlc te the governorship. Near at
hand Governer Davis sips his tea and
chats with Fusionist friends, who call him
" Frank, " but refuse te call him "Gov "Gov
ereor." President Lecke of the state
house Senate, and the geld spectacled,
benevolent gentleman who presides ever
the Fusionist Heuse, both eat cuts from
the same sirleinf There are some few
radical fellows whose partisanship colors
their every action, but in the main
(non pun) tlicic is about the same
state of feeling as is displayed be
tween rival factions gathered te attend a
political convention. It is perfectly safe
te address every man as " colonel" " ma
jor" or " captain." Maine, in this respect
resembles Mississippi. Fusionist Gever
nor Smith is as Democratic in his ways as
Old Hickory himself. He smokes a T.
D." pipe and has no sort of anxiety
about coloring the lace curtains. He is
as full of old Penobscot grit as Governer
Davis, and with a suit of armor would
pass for one of King Jehn's barons.
Thiougheut the caily part of the night the
rival partisans play euchre, and a few way
ward, wicked men indulge in twenty
fivecents' worth of poker. The Maine law
prevents anybody getting a glass of nerve
quieting lager, or honest ale, but there is a
superabundance of "cool refreshing gin,'"
doctored brandy and forty-red whisky.
Even the Sunday school men take some
thing for their stomachs, A scientific ob
server of this Maine muss ascribes it all te
a tee exclusive diet of ice water and pic.
A community se fed is certainly fit for
treason, stratagems and spoils. The Maine
law, if repealed se far as malt liquors arc
concerned, and applied te pie and ice
water, would restore the stability of the
government. A sojourn among a mob
who talk constitutional law and carry re
volvers is dull enough.
