When your flower pTants get from an
inch and a-half te two inches high, they
should be thinned out and transplanted.
It should be done after rain, or the ground
from which they are taken and whither they
are put be threughly moistened. A little
ball of soil should go with each, and they
should be firmly set A garden trowel is
the best implement with which te remove
the plants.
Mulching.
Trees transplanted this spring should be
mulched as seen as the ground becomes
dry. Fer this purpose grass is as geed as
anything Don't put around the tree tee
much at a time, and repeat the mulch
when it gets dry and thin. Remove it two
or three times, during the summer, and
stir up the ground well, then replace. It
will save many a tree, if the season should
be het and dry. Strawbeiry, raspberry,
aud blackberry beds should also be well
mulched. Any quantity of dry str 3" about
the pla:e, especially leaves, facrapings, &c,
or short grass cut from the lawn, will de.
An application of the contents of a hot
bed is very beneficial.
Sweet Apples.
Fifty or sixty years age sweet apples
were regarded as a special feature in an
orchard. In fact, however small an
orchard might be, there were always two
or three of the sweet varieties. The early
Harvest apple was particularly desirable.
They began te ripen in August and became
very soft and possessed a line flavor. Then
there was the Sweet Vandcrvcrc, which
was a geed winter variety, and was te be
found in every orchard. This apple was
used for drying, for winter use, and was
besides being made into pics, boiled and
eaten with a sauce, intermixed with dough
dumplings. They were much prized, es
pecially by the German farmers, and helped
te make out many dinner when ether dried
fruit was scarce.
After this time the desire for sweet ap
ples declined, and te such an extent that
net a single tree would be found in an or
chard of a hundred. But within the last
five years they have begun te come into
favor again, and new there is seldom an
orchard set out in which there arc net
three or four choice sweets, but much su
perior te these formerly grown and much
appreciated.
