"The Weed."
The Lecal Tobacco Trade.
Much diversity or opinion exists among
men who arc supposed te knew, as te what
will probably be the total yield of the to
bacco crop of 1880 in this county and state.
The estimate made by five packers and
printed in Saturday's Intelligencer, is
much criticised by ether packers who re
gard it as tee high. Their observation and
information from different sections lead
a them te bclieve that the crop of this county
) will scarcely exceed 30,000 cases. They say
' that while it is true that there is much
1 fine tobacco in the county, there is much
mere that is small, se small that it will net
average two cases te the acre. The late

it would. Much el it is stinted and under
the most favorable conditions will net
make large leaves, and under unfavorable
conditions will yield little or nothing. They
state that the " 30,000 cases in Yerk" are
a geed deal like FallstaiTs " seven men in
buckram" they arc net there and itwill
bother Yerk te show mera than 15,000
casus. Clinten county is also ever-estimated
by one-half, se is Lebanon, Chester andthe
counties that grew smaller quantities. On
the whole the critics think the yield of the
fctatc will net be mere than 100,000 cases,
and may be less.
We give the above opinions for what
, they arc worth. Our own advices from
various sections arc te the effect that the
earlier premise of the season is net en the
whole being realized. The increased acre
age is net yielding a corresponding in
creased weight. This is accounted for by
excessive dreuths, excessive rain, sudden
changes of temperature, depredations by
cut-worms, green-worms, grass-hoppers
and fleas, and ether unfeituuatc circum
stances. The tobacco that is geed, is very
geed, and will bring fully as high prices as
the best of 1879, but it is agreed en all hands
that there is net se large a proportion of it.

pay for ten acres only thus destroyed. Of
course there was a geed deal destroyed

net heavy.
AH the buyers who were in our market
last year arc airain en hand, and half a
IV; dozen new ones arc added te the list. As

merely looking at the crops of 1879 and
1880. Of the former one-half has perhaps
been inspected, and of the latter, about
one-half cut oil'. During the past week
200 or 300 cases of 1879 were sold. Te
show that the ci en turns out better than
I the buyers expected, it may be stated that

are here trying te buy ether packings at
higher figures. One heavy manufacturing
firm, which had intended te take only 300
cases, is making arrangements te take
1,200.
As te the supposed wearing out of farm
lauds devoted te tobacco, here is an in
stance in point te disprove it. Jacob L.
Frcy last fall sewed in wheat an acre of
land that had been ler several years con
secutively planted in tobacco. The yield
of wheat from this acre was 44$ bushels
and two pounds. Pretty geed for " worn
out" land. The wheat was of the " Han
cock" Fultz variety, and that may be one
reason why it stands at the head of the
column ; but the fact appears te be that the
heavy manuring and constant cultivation
aud pulverization of land planted in to
bacco, fits it peculiarly for the growth of
wheat.
