A FEW WORDS ABOUT THAT BALLOON ASCENSION.
io.. lite Herald aa J Review hating both ex
pressed them&olres very strongly in disapproba
tion of the coarse pursued by M. Godasd in his
balloon ascension on the Fifth, it is bot fair
tfmt a correct statement of the circumstance
attending the whale ttfiir should be laid before
the public. liefore M. Gontio agreed to make
an sAccnuion from this place, it was expressly
stipulated that under certain conditions of thine,
he should have tlte sole privilege of saving vho
houiti go up with him orjuhether any one
should. Those who rrniemher anything of the
state of the wind on the Fifth, know that an
asrn.ion before six o'clock in the evening
would hive !vii utt.-nJcd with thj greatt-.t
danger ai..l H.siblc loss of life. Even when the
hour of b. came, the wind was still violent, and
no one bavins any regard for those who were to
be pissengen, would have insisted upon their
going op at the peril of life and limb.
vTe are inclined to think that the Herald ex
pected to get the first report of tile sig'its from
above, and hence their greit anxiety that Mr.
I.rwis should join preference to Dr. FreiLivo.
Indeed a " legitimate member " of the printers'
emit, whose condition was such as to render
him exeeclingly rommunic&tive, was in consid
erable anguish of mind because the "Represen
tative of the Herd: J " was not to have the pre-.
ferenee in the selection of passengers. The- ed
itors of the Herald could not raise courage
nouirh among the list to attempt the journey.
they went into the "outer townships"
and procured the services of a countryman
whose experience in these matters was exceed
ingly limited, and whose life was nothing in
comparison to that of one of themselves.
Mr. Lswis waived all claim to the first seat
when assured by M. Godaed thai the ascension
would be attended with danger. In this he
khowed a sagacity the Herald editors did not
expect, and wc are somewhat astonished that
they did not vent a portion of their spleen upon
aim, while they were giting GoniiD so com
plete a Mack -guarding.
Dr. Stikling being acquainted with the
French language it was eminently proper that
he should go. He was desirou-. of going even
under all the adverse circumstance,: Ur. Lewis
was not; M. Godaed did not insist upon Dr.
Steelixu, bnt would hav, went alone rather
than to tike two persons.
To give a thorough exposition of the whole
matter of the delay in the ascension, tc , would
require a knowledge of aronautics we do not
possess. But palpable facts are given, which
are quite sufficient to iTestroj.the unfair state
ments of the Herald and Rrrmc.
la this connexion wc publish tl.o following
testimonial to M. Godaed :
Cleveland, O., July 7th, IbotJ.
MOSS. C'ODAED
Dear Sir : We, tho nn.Iersioned citizen.
of Clevclarfil.take this opportunity to express
you our unqualified satisfaction on account
your balloon Ascension, on the 5th inst., from
our city; we also congratulate you upon your
safe descent. "VTe have known from the first
the terms of your engagement. We also wit
nessed, on the day of trial, the many embarrass
naeuts that beset you, which no human sagacity
or skill could anticipate or control. We believe
that your engagement has been substantially
fulfilled, that general satisfaction prevailed
thi; minds of the va.t multitude who witnessed
yemr asrt. Fully impressed with this belief,
and wishing for your future trials a like success,
we remain respectfully,
Sam'l Staecweathee, Mayor.
Edwaed KlSSVAK, 1
lie:. B. Sextek, V Com o Balloon.
James Hill, j
We learn that it is highly probable an
other ascension will be made by M. Godaed
from this city daring the present week, proba
bly on Saturday next.

Her perplexity was increased upon finding
her husband with two bills in his uaoi, and a
countenance exntessive of anxiety and concern.
"Look, Mary," he said as she entered.
"Here are two unexpected calls for money
one from the doctor, and the other from the
dealer in leather from w horn I purcliased my
last stock. 1 hev are both urgent tor lmmeill
tite pavment, although thev have always been
willin" to wait a few months nnlii I roul.lmake
arranirements to meet their claims. But mis
fortunes never come single, and if a man once
gels a little behind hand, trouble seems to pour
in upon his."
'Just so," replied his wile. '-The neighbors
think we are going down lull, aud every one is
reaily to give us a push. Here ere two more
bills for jou one from the grocer and the other
from the teacher
Kent was prevented by a knock at the door,
anil the appearance ol a nfl wno presenteu
neatly folded paper and tiisappeared.
"The butchers account, as 1 five." ex
claimed the astonished shoemaker. M What is
to be done, Mary ' o much money to be paid
out, and very little coming in ; for some of my
best customers have left me, although my work
has always given good satisfaction: If I could
only have employment as usual, and the usual
credit allowed me, I could soon satisfy all these
claims ; but to meet them now is impossible,
and the acknowledgment of my inability will
send us still farther on the downward path."
"We must trust in providence," was the con
solatory remark of his wile, as a second knock
at the uoor aroused the fear that another claim
ant was about to appear.
But the benevolent counlenar.c of Uncle
Josotia, a rare but welome visitor, presented
itself. Seating himself in the comfortable chair
which Mary hastened to hand him, be said, in
his somewhat exeentric, but friendly manner :
"Well, good folks, I understand that the
world does not go quite as well with yon as for
merly. Whatia the trouble !"
" 'there need be no trouole, sir," was the re
ply, " if man would not add to the alHictiuns
which the Almighty sees to be necessary lor us.
The winter was a trying one. We rutt with
sickness and misfortunes which we endeavored
' tu boar with nntience. All would now ft . well
if thote around were nut determined to push m
in the downwad path."
But there lies tne dimcujry, Inentl ihomp-
son. iais is a seineu woriu. r.ver Douy, or
at least a great ntojurity care only for number
one. It they see a ioor neigulior going down
bill, their first thought is whether it will effect
their own interests, an t provided they can se
cure themselves, they care not bow soon he goes
to the bottom. Tbe only way is to keep up ap
pearances. iShow no signs of going behind
hand, aud all will go well with you."
"Very true, L ncie Joshua, but how is this to
be done! Bills that 1 did nit expect to be call
ed upon to meet fur the next three months, are
pouring in upon me. My best customers are
leaving me lor a more tertunate rival, in snort,
I am on the brink of ruin, aud nought but a
miracle can save me."
A miracle which is very easily wrought
then, I amngine, my good friend. W hat is the
amount of these d, bis which press so heavily
upon you, and bow soon, in the common course
of events, could you discharge them!"
"Tbey do not exceed one hundred dollars,
replied th. shoMuaker, 'and with my usual run
of work, I could make it all right iu three or
four months"
"We will say six, was the answer. "I will
advance you one hundred and fifty dollars hr
six months. Fay every rent you owe; and with
the remainder of the money make some sligl.t
addition or improvement iu your snop or House,
and put everything about the grounds in its
usual neat order. Try this plan for a few weeks
and we will see what c licet it has upon our
orthy neighbors. No.no, never mind thank
ing me. 1 an only trying an experiment on
human nrture. I know you of old, and hav
no doubt that my money is sale in your liaruls
eeks passed br. 1 lie advice of Lncle Joshua
had been strictly followed, and the change in the
shoemaker s prospects was indeed wonderful.
He was spoken of as one of the most thriving
men in the village, and many marvellous stories
were told to account lor the sudden alteration
in his afairs. It was generally agreed that a
distant relative had loueathed to him a legacy.
which had entirely relieved him of his pecuni
ary difficulties. Old customers and Dew ones
crowded in upon him. Ibev had never Delore
realized the beauty and durability of his work.
The polite botcher selected the best piece of
meat for his inspection as be entered, and was
loraliv indifferent to thar-thae of navment. Ihe
dealer in leather called" to inform him that his
best hides awaited his orders. The teacher
eompanied the children home to tea, and spoke
in high terms of their improvement, pronounc
ing them among her best scholars, the dress
maker snddrnly foun t herself free from the
great press of work, and in a friendly note ex
pressed her desire to oblige Mrs. Thompson in
any way in her power.
"Just as I eapeeted," exclaimed Uncle
Joshua, rubbing km hands exultingly, as the
enteral shoemaker called upon Lim at the ex-
piration of six months, with the money which
had been loaned in time of need. " Just as I
expected. A strange world ! They are ready
to push a man up1 hill if he seems to be ascend
ing, and jnst as ready to push him down if they
tVtncv that his face is turned that way. In fu
ture, neighbor Thompson, let everything about
yon wear an air of prosperity, and yoa will be
sure to prosper. And witn a satislied air, L n
ele Joshua placed his money in his pocket book
ready to meet some other claim npoa his be.
nevoience. whilst he whom he had thus be
friended, with liht steps and cheerful counte
nance, returned to his happy Dome
