Alleged Imposition. We ha,e received a
communication from a gentleman ia Summit

aay. "is unJoub'.lj a finished rogue." The
one referred to, has been passing around claim
ing to be a fugitive fn.ni slavery , bas traveled
somewhat on the U. G. R. R. and received some
aid from the Anti-SLverr community. tChile
the man may be a finished rogue, oar corres

we, therefore, decline publishing his article-

AIithodism A work entitled The Ei.tory
of the Religious Movement of the Eighteenth
Century, called Methodism, considered in its
different denominational forms, and its relations
to British and American Protestantism, by Vbel
Stephens, L. L. D." has been laid on our table
by Messrs. Ingham fc Bragg.
The design of the compiler is to present. In
four volumes, a complete history of Methodism
the first and present volume containing the
history of the earliest times of the sect until the
death of WhiUield. The second volume will
complete the history of English Method inn,
while the third and fourth will be devoted to the
history of the Methodist Episcopal Church, bring'
ing the matter down t-t the year IS 3a.
All the principal events and persons connect'
ed with the denomination are treated of ia the
book, and the Ecclcsiasli.-al Economy, the Doc
trines, the Psalmody and Literature of Metho
dism are noticed and discussed.
It will be a valuable book for reference and
f jr its biographical sketches. This volume is
embellished with a fine profile likeness of John
Wesley, the Father of Methodism.
Carlton A Porter, New York, are the publishers.
XcasiEiNu Uocses. The passage and en
forcement of the ordinance for numbering houses
and business Docks, offices, stores Ac, is a
move in the right direction. Mr. J. B. Wilbur,
appointed by the City Council a short time since
to number the buildings corre.-tly on all the va
rious streets in town, is accomplishing this good
work thoroughly, and wc think from the man
ner in which he proceeds there will be no ne
cessity of this business having to be done again,
so long as the numliered tenements stand. Not
only are buildings, but all the intervening va
cant l"ts nninliered ; coii5ejurntly whenever
built upon, the pro-r numlier cin be learned
by examining the the diagram of all the streets
and alleys, drafted expressly to show the loca
tion of building lots. The expenses to each in
dividual are very trifling ju comparison to the
benefit of having their places of business or
residence accurately numbered. In many in
stances we have known two and even three
Kos. of the same kind in one street, thus put
ting people to much inconverience in going to
the wrong places. There can be no doubt but
when this uniform system of numbering is fully
carried out, and completed in all parts of tb
city, it will meet with general approbation.
Then let us have the streets named at ench
corner for the especial benefit of strangers and
citizens.
Sad Accident to Caft. T. W. Tayloi.
We are pained to announce a serious accident
to Capt. Thomas W. Taylor, of the bri; Black
Havk, which has just reached Lake Erie, un
her way from Liverpool, Eng and, to this city,
with a carpo of pig iron and salt. The Buffalo
Commirctal Adrtrtucr says that as the brig was
about entering the outlet of the Wclland Cans1,
at Port Colbome, C. ' a seaman on board
named Marcellus Rollins, belonging to the
town of Rockland, Maine, got one ot bis legs
entangled in the hawser used in bringing the
vessel up, and had it severed from the body be
low the knee. Capt. Taylor, seeing bis danger,
like a true sailor, rushed to his relief, and be
coming also entangled, lust one of his legs in
the same way.
With characteristic generosity, Capt. IlarJi
son, of the tug Uttdmrriler, placed his vessel,
Ac , at the disposal of the unfortunates, and af
ter procuring temporary surgical aid, took them
on board and brought them to Buffalo, where
they were placed in the hmJs of Ir. Hamilton,
at the Hospital, who pcrfurmed amputation in
both eases, below the knee. They are doing
well.
This is a sad ending to a successful voyage
for Capt Taylor, who bas shown himseif the sfar
master of the Lake and Liverpool fleet in this
voyage, and is deserving of great eredit for the
seamanship and skill displayed on the voyage
out and back. Herald last tretung.

The Happy Old Preachers.
Tha fiitj-sevcjitii session of the Ohio Con

number of the Fathers of the Methodist Church
in the West, and their Love feast on Sunday
morning was "a gracious season. A corres
pondent of the Christian Advocate bas gather
ed up some of the fragments of religious expe
rience related, which give an inkling of the
toils, trials and triumphs of the humble and
faithful followers ol the Cross. We quote :
Father David Lewis remarked : "It has been
sixty years since Uod converted my soul, and
fifty years since I commenced preaching the
uospel. lirelliren, 1 am nappy in Uod to-dav;

traveled much, labored hard, and had many
trials. But trials never discouraged me. 1 am
now winding up gloriously. Never happier
in all my life than I am this day. Never saw a
more glorious morning than this." On Mon
day uight, just before the appointment were
read, be said : "Jiretbren, 1 have now attended
my tifty-eeventh annual contbreuae. Through
kind i rovidence, 1 nave never missed one
since I started. I have attended nine sessions
of the General Conference. But, brethren, I
do expect that when yon assemble in Colum
bus, next year, I will be in glory. I never felt
that I was so near the heavenly dorr as I do
to night. If y.u read of iny death iu the Ad

Iter, xtatiianicl esterman was permitted in
early life to sit under the ministry of Benson,
Clarke, Newton, .Bunting, and other irreat and
good men, of the British Wesicyan Church, lie
paid an ardent tribute to the memory of Ins

his father's absence. Once, when his lather was
out upon the perilous deep, he saw his mutuer
kneeling erect, at the family altar, and ler-eut-ly
praying lor his dither's safety. This produced
bis first awakening. Said he, "Thirty-one years
ago, in old Baltimore, I was converted to Uod.

tribute to his pious mother, wbo prayed success
fully at home for him, while he was seeking
religion at camp meeting. When he started for
his first circuit, she took a list of the appoint
