It will be seen that the Fifth of the Wards, bas
built the most bouses and expended the most
money, aud DrooUlyu, of the Townships, ditto. This
I does not include those houses and additions DOW
being built, of which there are a g 'eat number.
Upon Superior, St. Clair, aud Lake streets, there
are niauy ot these buildings, the most of them being
small. Mr. Jacob Hovey lias lately completed a
fine brick two story house at No. 391, Lake street,
which is finished iu a superior manner.
Jtlr. William Moo.ie is erecting a pleasant two
story brick house near the corner of St. Clair and
Back streets. It is to be stoue to the top of baso
mint and the remainder of brick. Tbe house is 25
by 35 feet. Cody A Uorham, masons; M. C. Wy

The Clothing Tcade. A cold bloak winter
li coming on ; trost and suoiv will soon take tue
place of dust and warmth, and our bright Indian
summer will be in the by-gone days while the
whislliug winds and the icy pavements will remind
us each day of the blessiugs of fuel and waim
clothes. And upon the last point let us call atten
tion to the old established house of W S Robiuson,
where clothing for the million can be procured at
low rates upon short notice. For eight years this
establishment bas been doing a large business in
the clothing line, each year adding to its trade, un
til now the goods from it go abroad throughout
the west. It is a mammoth wholesale and retail
establishment where every variety of clothes and fur.
uishiug goods may be procured, from a heavy pi
lot overcoat to the most delicate haudkerchief.
All descriptions of cloths for gentlemen's wear are
upon the shi Ives, and custom work is rapidly turn
e(j out nnjer the direction of an experienced cutter
and faithful workmen. Through the huge and
well tilled store each customer can Cud goods to
suit his taste and bis pare, and in the heaviest
rush of trade, there will he enough for all. A line
assortment of rubber goods can here be found
which are made on an improved plan, lighter, and
yet more serviceable thau those made heretofore.
But space would forbid anything like a full enu
meratiou ofal! the articles to be found at this cloth
ing emporium. Suffice it to say, that here the wants
ol all cau be satisfied at low figures. The number
has been changed from SB, by which the house has
Wn Liii.trn ttironehout all this region, to IsO
where Ilobison will ever be found to attend to his
customers.

We by our firesides can hardly realixe the hor

BE A WOMAN.
Oft I've heard a gentle mother,
As the twiligat hours began,
Pleadiug with a sou ou duty,
Urging him to beamau.
But uuto her blue-eyed daughter.
Thouirh with love's words quite ready.
Points she out the other duty,
"Strive, my dear, to be a lady."
What 's a lady '. Is it something
Made of hoops, and silks, aud airs.
Used to decorate the parlor.

Speak of something higher far,
Thau to he mere fashion's lady
"Woman" is the brighter star.
If ye, in your strong attection,
Urge your son to be a true man.
Urge your daughter no less strongly
To arise and be a woman.
Yes. a woruan brightest model
Of that light aud perfect beauty.
Where the mind, aud soul, and body,
Bleud to woik out life's great duty
Be a womau uanght is h ighc-r
Ou the gilded list ot fame;
On the catalogue of virtue
There's no brighter, holier name.
Be a woman on to duty.
Raise the world from all that's low,
Place high in the social heaven
Virtue's fair and radiant bow!
Lend thy influence to each effort
That shall raise our uature human;
Be not fashion's gilded lady
Be a brave, whole souled, true woman.
BE A WOMAN. EVERY WRINKLE A LINE OF BEAUTY.

"I don't like old people," said a thoughtless
young girl, "they arc either cross, disagreeable,
or ugly.
lou have been unfortunate in your chances
of observation," replied a lady sitting near her.
'It may tie so. but 1 seak, at leaat from ex
perience. All the old people it has been tuy
fortune, or misfortune, to meet, have been cross
n temper, and repulsive in appearance. I have
an old aunt who always is associated in my
mind with the Witch of Endoi. From a child
I have had a perfect horror of her. I doubt if
she ever gave utterance to a kind or uncom
laming word m her lite."
"You must n-jt judge all by this aunt, my
young friend," said the lady. "There are hand
some and agreeable old people iu the world, and
not a lew ol them either, but many. Age does
not necessarily sour the temper, nor mar the
countenance. There is such a thing as 'grow
ing old gracefully,' and the number of those who
arc thus advancing along the paths of life, I am
pleased to say, are increasinryearly. I hippen
to have an old auut also, but, so far from beiug
a second Witch of Eudor, I heard a gentleman,
not many days ago, remark, in speaking of her,
V by, every wrinkle in Mrs. tldcr s lace is a
inc of beauty." Aud so it is: for every wrinkle
there was born of patient endurance or unselfish
devotion to the good of others. I look at her
dear old face often and often, aud say to myself
now is sue not nanusouie : '
'I should really like to sec your aunt," said
the young girl, half skeptically.
"Come to my house to-morrow, and wo will
pay her a visit," answered the lady. "It will
do both of us good."
"Inank you lor the invitation. 1 will cer
tainly call."
inc next day came, ana me youus laj, , u
earlv at the house of Mrs. liarton.
Glad to seo you, Kate," was the pleasant
o-reetin she received. "We are to call on my
Auut Elder, 1 believe.
"Yet; you I romised t ) introduce nieto an old
lady who, so far trom beinir cross and ugly, is
sweet tempered and beautiful. The sweet tem
per I cau imaoine, but not a face wrinkled and
beautiful at tue same time.
You shall see," she auswereu.
'Ah, good morning, Marv," said a low, but
very pleasant and cheerful voice, as the two la
dies enterfd the small but neat and orderly sit-
till" room of Mrs. Elder.
Mv friend, Miss Kate V illiams, said Mrs
liarton. presentim: the younir lady.
Mrs. Elder laid her knitting upon a table,
close to her open Bible, and rising, Uok the hand
of Miss Williams, looking earuestly into her
young face as she did so, ami smiling so sweet
a welcome, that Kate did not see a wrinkle, lor
the beautiful light that shone from the old lady's
placid countenance.
"I am always pleased to see young faces
said Mrs. Elder, "aud to feel the w arnith of
young hearts."
"Hon arc you to-day, aunt !" inquired Mrs.
Barton.
' Xot so well in body as when you were here
last. I sleep but poorly."
Mrs. Elder smiled as if she were telling of
enjoyments, and then added
"But tliis is iue of the penaliies of age
knew it must come, and long ago made up my
mind to be patient and enduring. There ate
some of the light atEictions, lasting but a mo
ment which, if home in Christian meekness,
help to work out for us that far more, exceeding
and eternal weigut oi giory, ui wuicu sue apos
tle refers in one of his sublime passages."
Miss Williams looked at the old lady half
wonderingly.
"Always doing something, Aunt Elder," said
Mrs. Barton, placing her hand upon the half-
knit yam stocking w hich the old lady had put
aside as she row to take the hand of Miss Wil
liams. "Knittin?, I suppose, has grown into
kind of habit. A he act brings its own reward.
It is tout pleasant pastime.'
"So cbald, not my pleasant pastime, but my
useful employment, answered Mrs. .Elder,
can't do much in this world for other people
still I can do a little and 1 am t lankful for the
orivilege ; for 1 don't relieve it is possible lor
any one to be happy who is not engaged in some
useiul employment. 1 manage to Keep me
children of some half dozen poor families
warm stockings for the winter, and that
something added to tbe common stock of bu
man comfort."
Tne eves of Miss Williams were hied intent
ly urion the old ladv's age-marked leatures
Wrinkles went curving about her cheeks, her
libs and chin, and wrinkles planted themselves
deeply upon her forehead. Grey hairs were
visible beneath her cap border ; her calm eyes
lav back in their hollow sockets ; the symme
try of her mouth was gone ; and yet it seemed
to the yonng girl, as she gaxed at her wonder
ingly, as if every wrinkle in that aged face were
indeed a Hue ol beauty :
"But tou must have a surer foundation loi
happiness than knitting stockingv," said Mrs.
Barton.
The old lady seemed thoughtful for a mo
ment She then said, with sweet inipreseive
ness ' There is only one foundation upon which
we can rest and find happiness, and that
God's love in the heart. The great question
for us all is. How to obtain that love ! It will
not come at our command. We cannot drag
down from Heaven. We cannot find it, search
we ever so diKgentlv. God's love is God giv
en ; and he liestows it only on those who first
have neiuhborl v love. This is that higher love's
receptacle in the human heart, first, love
the neighbor ; then, love ot ivon, wmcn is ai
vine love iu the soul, the sure foundation
abiding happiness. So you see Mary the value
of even kmtung stockings to one like me.
is useful work, and that, as the old monk said,
is worshio."
Miss Williams could not withdraw her eyes
from the old lady's face. Its beauty and
goodness seemed to lasciuato her. bhe was
tirl of auick feelinirs aud some enthusiasui.-
Suddcnlv risina- from the chair she had taken
few moments before, she came forward
stooping over Mrs. Elder, kissed her, almost
reverently, on the foreheao, Baying, as sue
so
I "May I be like you when I grow old every
wrinkle in my face aline of beauty !"
'Grow old in toodneiis, mv dear vount'
rieud," auswerej Mrs. Elder, taking her liaml
ightly with n her own, and sie.-ikini with emo
tion for the young girl's tudden speech had
iirreu ner leelingr to an unusual depth "Grow
ild in goodness, through the discinliiie of self-
denial and the gentle leadings of neigLborly
love. It is the only path that conduct to a
peaceful old age.'
"Ihanks lor the lesson you have taui'ht me."
said Miss Williams, when alio again clasgied
the hand of Mrs Elder in parting. " I'll try
i grow ow, as tne years pass inevitably on
ards, in the better way that ou have walked.
Aud may tuy last davs be like Yours, mv best
days, aud radiant with light shining down from
the better world."
"I am a skeiiti.- no lonaer." (she was now in
the street with Mrs. Barton;) beauty and age
are not incoinpatablc "
Hut the beauty ol O'-e," replied Mrs. Lar
son, "is unlike the beauty of youth ; one is nat-
rai, tne other spiritual and celestial. 1 ne one
ot the earth earthly the other is ot the
eavens heavenlv. An evil s. ul orajuallv
mars tlie face, until every linr:uueiit becomes
repulsive ; but a soul ot goodness continu illy
reereates the countenance and covers it with
living beauty."
