years this Association, which has outlived ita
prototype, the New York Art Union, has been
gaining ground and friends, as its objects and
its plans have become more generally known. The
auuual 1IUI1 ibntion of paintings and statuary, which
Ls made to the subscribers, has done much to dis
seminate a knowledge ai d love for the fine arts
throughout the l.uid. Tbe paintings which are to
be distributed gratis to tbe subscribers on tbe 1st
of January next, are now ou exbibitioa at the va
rious ageucies. At the music store of Ossian E
Dodge, a colli ctiou of some of the most valuable of
these has been on free exhibition to the pnblic for
several weeks. These paintings f-o to Buffalo this
week, and those wishing a view of them most call
soon, bach member of the Association has
chance of drawing one of these paiutiugs.

connection with the Weber family will not appear

ALr. Burnett. Owing to the most unfavora
ble weather during the whole of last week, the
audiences at the Melodeon to hear and sec Burnett
were small. We regret this, as surely no one could
Bpend an evening more agreeably than in listening
to his personations, and much profit as well as en
tertainment is to be gained from bearing him. He
has made the capabilities of the luinan voice his
itudy for years, and has reached a point in elocu
tionary execution that few attain to. We shall
hope at no distant day to again bid him welcome
to our city.

Found Dead. Mrs. Elizabeth Bisk, an aged
widow living on Chestunt street, was found dead
in her bed nn Friday afternoon. She lived alone
in a bouse slauding back from the street, a tenant
occupying one in front. During the day she was
not seen at all by the family of this tenant, and
about dark he went to the window, and, looking
in, saw the furniture and things in the room in
strange disorder. Calling some of the neighbors,
they broke open the door and found tbe woman ly
ing on tbe bed aud exhibiting symptoms of having
died in great agony. Her muscles were extremely
rigid, one hand being pressed closely to her face,
which was much bruised npon one side. From tbe
appearance of the body, she doubtless died in a
convulsive fit. A bottle of liquor was found in tbe
room. There will piobably be no inquest, as tbe
circumstances plainly indicate the cause of her
death. She has a daughter in Cauada, but no
friends in this city.
She was tbe owner of the two bouses in which
she and the tenant lived.

Canal Tolls. From the Herald we take tbe
following action of the Board of Trade, on Satur
day last, relative to Canal Tolls :
During the recess of the committee Arthur
Hughes submitted the following resolution iu ref
ereuce to the Canals, enforcing the necessity of
action in the premises, by stating the fact that a
bill for the sale of the Canals had passed the lower
boose of the Assembly ,and was now in the Senate.
Whereas, The principle of low tolls on tbe Ohio
Canals produciug a greater revenue to the Stale,
is no ionger doubted by those who have investi
gated tbe subject, the tendency of the system
being to draw the products of the State to the
Cauais for sale, they furnishing the cheapest
mode of transportation; and as the transportation
of property is cheapened the difference is added
to its value, wbi?h is so much gain to the produ
cer, now, therefore, in order to fully test this
system, and to oppose the sale of the Canals, be
it therefore
Rcsolecd, That meetings be called by all those
who favor the above system along the hue of the
Canals, to appoint delegates to meet in Convention
at Columbus, on Wednesday, the 6ih day of Janu
ary, 1859. at 10 o'clock A. M. Tbe object or the
Convention is to adopt such measures as are ne
cessary to prevent tbe sale of tbe Canals, and to
bring about tbe system of low tolls.

mittee of ten delegates from this Board, to meet in
Convention as above stated.

Found Dead. A man was found yesterday ly
ing dead by the Bide of the track of the C. & P. B.
R., near Hammondsville. The manner of his death
is not certainly known. A slight bruise on the
shoulder was tbe only indication of injury. Our
inrorman.t stated that he was a carpenter, and re
sided in Hammondsville, and was a man of intem
perate habits. Whether intoxicate! at tbe time of
the accident was not known.
