HOMES OF NEW ENGLAND AUTHORS.
HOMES OF NEW ENGLAND AUTHORS. How and Where the "Poverty-Stricken"
Literati Live.
[From the Round Table.]
Edgewood.
Ik Mtrrel" baa written very folly of
hi! charming home upon the hillside, which
he calls "Slj arm at JSdgewood. " it la
itnated about three miles from New
Haven, Connecticut, peering oat most
cheerfully from the fortst upon the hill'
side behind 'the beautiful little Til'
lage of WeetTiile. hear by a grand old
rock rises prond t and nines its ebadow
OTer the lorely valley that intervenes be
tween Edgewood and the sound. Mr. Mit
cheli has desoribed it most perfectly, and
oenainly very charmingly, in his recent
bock. There is no sign of poverty about
that home. Ruher there is a wealth of
beauty, quiet, refinement and modest ele
gance, which betokens anything but the
unreetof need or the fruits of misfortune.
It is a geniaL beautiful hems the abode
of real wealth and genuine happiness.
BRIGHTWOOD.
"Timothy Titcomb" (J. G. Holland,
Esq.,) is certainly a most striking proof
that the (en is not (he weapon of poverty.
Not many years ago, friends will remem
ber, he was indeed po?r and unfortunaie.
But he clung most faithfully to the spirit
that moved within him, and worked right
valiantly over all doubt and difficulty,
until his ideal is about perfect, and no
handsomer home looks down upon all the
Connecticut valley than the elegant, taete-
mi ana cheerful " Jirightwood, the home
of his own planning. It la looated near
?'prin2fieid, Massachusetts, npon a beaati
ul rise or t,,,,, , fftE
and near view of surpassing lovcaaese.
Should you chance to psas up that long
drivewBy that leads through the forest to
his doorway, you would not think that
authorship u the read to misfortune. And
should you meet there the doctor himself,
and receive trerethe cordi J welcome he
can give, you would think only of a wealth
such as any one might welt envy,
and a happiness that few homes besiow.
"Drightwood" is all bright and beautiful.
MRS. STOWE'S NEW HOME.
During the past year Mrs. Btowe has
been busy in planning for a new and ele
gant home in nartfoid, Connecticut. In
one of the finest looalities, upon the most
beautum avenue or the city, her new and
handeome dwelling id elected. Yon would
not think of p wcrly here, but "rather of
pleatilul abundance, and a taete thatlackj
not tbe means to be satisfied in every
partioular.
ROSE TERRY'S HOME.
This, too, is in Hartford, and is situated
ia the midst of beauty and elegance.
Those of her readers who have enjoyed so
many delightful stories, s many oh arm
ng poems, need never think of a hand
that was ever so empty that a stream of
kindly love and charity coull not flow
forth. There is the quiet loveliness per
vadin g her quaint home that distinguishes
so geueially the homes of our authors.
loa would never think of anything but
plenty there.
GAIL HAMILTON'S HOME.
Miss Abigail Dodge lives quietly but
meet pleasantly in the staid old town of
Hamilton, Maesaehufetts. Everybsdy for
miles around can tell you just where to
noil " Abby Dodge, for she is a heroine
in tW secluded oounlry district. A larg;

quietly and happily under its weleome
sbelter, close by the roadside, two miles
from the village of Concord. It is so con

eouteiously. And then if you should aek
a-y farmer for niilos around for the fioute
of Mr. Eawthorne, how quickly and
proudly he would point you over into the
valley, under the shadow of the hills, to
the strange roof towering above the trees.
It must have been an old house remodeled,
thus to be so fantastic end odd-shaped.

is shrubbery, and vines are clinging ev
erywhere. There is a strange atmosphere
of mastery and sacred etilineas about it.
No want hangs its cloud over the spirit
that male that home so famous. Air.
H,.wtbornc's labors were profitable and
satisfactory. He never was begging his
talents before ths American people. And
his strange, secluded horae disclosed it all.
Only a few miles on, uuou the same road,
still stands the rough shelter that Xhoreaii
has celebrated in the weiid tale of " Wal
