The Horrors of Submission Portrayed. The Bicfcmond Examiner of tho 30th has long And loud blast of war. The article to significant that we extract the follow ing: There are several erroneous impressions abroad, bearing upon this matter, which it would be as well to dispose of. People say and report to one another, rubbing their nanaj wiln innocent glne, ta&t tnore must have been some intimation conveyed to Seward from Europe, which makes the en emy so eager now to wind op tbe war : in fact that Ed el and and Prance might. Could, would or should have informed Lin coln that if, on the 4th of March next, he is not to be inauguratedPresident of the whole of the old States, they, Em-land and Prance, will recognize him only as President of note estates weucn concurred in nis elec tion. There is not the slightest evidence or foundation of fact for this or any kindred rumor. It is a blunder altogether. Not only is there no single symptom that these European powers are cnanging tneir poli cy in a manner favorable to us, but no oc casion will arrive on the 4th of next March for the recognition of any portion or any thing. The European powers know noth ing about the 4th of March. They don't renew their recognition of the United States on the inauguration of a new Presi- ent, and will not be called upon for any action whatsoever, that day more than any other day. That delusion may be dismiss ed. It is true the enemy is in a hurry to finish the war, but for different reasons ; one is, the usual Yankee, hiitrionic, melo dramatic sort of a reason, tbeir desire to have big fete day, and to commence .Lincoln s new term punctually at midnight of the 3d with a triumphant bell-ringing, and can non salutes, over a restored Union. An other reason, and mere pressing still, is that they understand perfectly well that they are at the end of their resources if we choose to hold out in resistance ; that both money and men their means are ex hausted; that their present armies in the field are their last. Yet for all that, it iB not bo much to cop ude a peace they seid their commissioners and their soam negoti ators, as to drive and distract us from the measures needful for our defence, while they move forwird toward the final in vestment of Richmond. They prefer to enter the city as conquerors, rather than obtain a treaty of peace between Richmond and Washington. At all events, if peace ouered, tbe terms of it will be as above stated. How will the army like it ? Do Confederate soldiers, indeed, confess them selves so utterly beaten,;that, after the per ns ana saennceg oi lour years; alter ine loss of so many gallant men in battle, un der a flag that is now renowned by land an sea, they would yield up the whole cause for which they have fought, the sov ereign right of the nation and States, to the control over their own institutions, to the possession of the rijhtof property, and lub wneriuince oi weir own cnilaren I Our soldiers, who have served throughout the war, have ever cherished the thought that when the struggle is over, and our independence won, iney will some time wear the grey confederate uniform, and naia won insignia or Weir rant, and tell their children and their grandchildren tbe story of some glorious day, when the set ting sun liiuminaiea ine victorious cross of stars. Yes, and many a bereaved fami ly preserves with fond pride the sword of their last brother or son, to attest in future generations how their kindred blood flowed so, for Southern independence. But now, now could it pe, u Bucn peace really fell upon us ? Hide, burn every shred of the Confederate cloth, rip off the stars and oars and Dury mem, so that no eye shall see r . Uare not to show the souve- ,.i ,uiie vou have lost, and breathe not their nanies. Let every vestige and remi niscence of the army that fought with Lee and Jackson sink out of sight, and eternal silence rest ovtr all that department of memory, mere is no need to speculate on the possibility of such infamy. It was wrong; it was weak beyond measure to permit the joumeyings to and fro of secret messengers without credentials, at the im minent risk of everything, and the milita ry spirit of the country, by turning men's thoughts to dreams and visions of peace, at tbe very moment when every energy onght to be strung and traced for the war. However, as it has begun, let us hope that this last step may be the last. All the peace party of the South protests that it will in nowise have a peace of sub mission and abolition. The parties who have gone to Washington are men of un derstanding, and they may, on their re turn, be able to make plain to the hum blest intellect that no other Deace than that is to be obtained, and silence all dis putes, and produce a desirable unanimitv. and so explode lorever all schemes and proj cts unworthy a gallant people. It may be hoped, then, to see an end of the feeblo kind of management of our publio affairs. With Lee as Generalissimo, wield ing uncontrol'ed power over ail our arm ies, and all our Generals, and Breckinridge m tho War department, we trust the rehl Dusinrss of the country v. ill have some chanco of being attended to, and the real buBinesi of the country is, for the present, war, ana not peace. , LADIES' W KAi-es.ua ajro X)aAWKKS, all sirct, la Merino and 8lk. iAYLOU, GaMsWOLD 00., i do..- BT Superior strsst.
