Tbe New York papers give full and in
teresting details of the destructive ' it re
which consumed the pyrotechnic establish
ment on Bt John street in that city on
Friday. The female operative who was
burned to death, proved to be named Cath
arine Cleves. Bhe was twenty-one years
old. A thrilling incident connected with
her fate is related. Various parties had
called at the station house in the early part
of the evening in the hope of identifying
her. but all failed. It was utterly unpos-
aible to trace any human lineaments ; for
the body was a mere bristling pue oi cm.
den, with hair roasted from the roots, nosa
, ... i ,
emed and features entirely erased. At
last a young man entered, and alter some
scrutiny, exclaimed : Tis my wife; I know
that wedding ring; ' and nere was seen a
gold ring on one of tbe finger bones. The
man fell prostrate and senseleBs on the
corpse, and was torn away only with diffl.
culty. The scene was most afflicting.
Tbe oonple were marriea only a lew
months.
Some Englishmen recently attempted
the ascent of Monte Ross. When almost
at the too an avalanche caught them and
carried them down to the foot of it. By
literally swimming in the snow some of
them tnanseed to ketp on the surface.
The two guides were the first to extricate
themselves, ana witn tneir ice axes tney
liberated one of the gentlemen, who was so
tightly wedged in that he could not move.
.Nothing was seen oi tne outer gentleman
but his heels. He was buried in the snow
head downwards. Fortunately he was
pulled out. Two of the porters were miss
ing, and all sat to work to Una them. . Al
te. some minutes they came upon one - of
them. "When extricated ha was black in
the face, insensible, and appeared to be
dead, but after a few seconds his lips
moved, hu breast slowly neavea, ana cy
degrees his consciousness returned. A
fruitless hour was spent in searching for
the other. On the following day a. party
of the guides found his body, six feet deep
in the snow, near tne place wnere tne av
lanche commenced.
