mind of the regiment, which, numbers about
350 men.

in Leaver County, Pennsylvania. He is de

noon a distal oaneo oconrred on Superior
street, betwesc a tbe police force and some
soldiers of thi 20th Ohio Infantry, which
can ted a tempt irary but Intense excitement
among onr eitii ens. The foots of the case
are these : So me soldiers of the 20th, eon
eiderably nsdei - the influenoe cf liquor, were
passing down. Superior street, in front of the
Weddell, mt.kingmuoh noise and using pro
fane and ol isce ie language, when an officer
of onr city polloe endeavored to arrest the
ring-leader. At this the others interfered
and a stru. gla ensued, in whioh the police
officer was . worsted and obliged to haul off
and seek assistance. Meantime a crowd
had gathei-ed, and the axcitement ran high.
The police officer, having seemed tbe assis
tance of t o or three ether polioemen and
few tram sn, again made an attack on the
party of soldiers, who by this time had cross
ed the street and were in front of L. T. and
Burgsss' blook. Resistance was agal
made and a straggle essned, which resulted
in the arrest of five of tho i.tldiors, among
them a Lieutenant, and their lodgment in
tho eity prison. The Lieutenant was subse
quently bai'.sd oat.
Excitew ent ran high for a time and many

friends o f the arrested soldiers, bnt wiser an
calmer counsels prevailed and no further
trouble is to be apprehended. Many oltiseni
blame the police for their oondaot in tho af
fair, bat the soldiers were oortalnly deserv
ing of arrest for drunkenness a.ld disturb
anoe, and the attempt to resist the cinders of
the law, because the offeader whom tbey seek
to arrest wears a uniform, is one which oar
manioipal authorities cannot and must not
tolerate.

A festival for the benefit of tho Sanitary
Commission was held at the Wright House in
East Cleveland, on Thnrsday evening last.
The proprietor of the hotel generonsly threw
open his rooms and cooking-apparatus to tbe
nseof the Committee, and the ladies of onr
patriotic suburb, with their aooustcmed
promptitude ar.d liberality, took the matter
in hssd and got up a spiesdid supper on very
short Eot'oo. The entertainment wag an
entire susoers, both finanoiaily and socially,
so much go indeed that another gathering
of the same sort will soon come off at the
Jackson House, the proprietor having made
the same generous offer that was made by
the landlord of the Wright Honse. East
Cleveland is always "up to tbe mark."
