op to the highest notions, of tho Editor's
somewhat particular wife, whom we have
come to look rjpon ns a connoisseur in past
ry matters. We get no better Dour than
that nwde at the fly month Mills. Mr. Sey

attention to sale and custom grinding.
. Law ia a game at which the most adroit and
unscrupulous succeed the best. It is a game,
nevertheless, a garde at which none but adepts
and experts, such as lawyers, lure any legit
imate right to piny. ' Aside from the considers
tion of legitimacy, it is not for the well-being
of a community, that the laity should n?sumc
any of the preregntives that belong to the
profession. Our reason for this is, thut by do
ing so, they take upon themselves a grievous
burden, under which they are very liable to
full. Though there may be here ond there
a esse of successful plunder, the current of
wholesome . public sentiment wilt mora than
balance the account, aud the amateur will
Hod himself a looser in the end. The professed
lawyer Cods it olberwi.-to. The game to him
m the business of life, and he who assays to
take a hand with him, unless he be the veriest
novice in the world, is not disappointed much,
if he comes out penled, and th? mutter passes
as a thing of course. There is more back -bone
more iugeimity to stand up under it.
A ease occurred in this village on Wednes-d.-.y
last, in which a poor wight, whose igno
rance of the law, Jed him into a violation of
the statute nfra'uist the hawking of goods of
foreign manufacture. The penulty is a heavy
me. ' He was nabbed hy tlie constable at tho
instance of one, whoso business interests he
ame in collision with. ' The prows was serv
d, but the defender of the-riolated dignity of
the law, proposed to compound (he matter, and
declined to appear aguinst him, if the culprit
would fork over to him as the story goes,' one
moiety of tbe penalty, and thut the sum of $54
was wrenched from the poor fcllow, in the
midst of tears -and tho most earnest appeals
for mercy, and the majesty of the law was satis
fied by the paynieut of the Justice, the o dicer's
and the attorney's foes. If onr Prosecuting
attorney cannot re-acb such cases ns these, ano
thcr session of the k'gislatuie should not be
suflbred to pass without t'ift passage of a law,
that will euuble him to do so.
These things are becoming a little too com"
mon, aud if they cannot bo suppressed by this
kind of exposure and condemnation, it is to be
hoped that they may be corrected iu a-more
summary and effective manner.
. Howard Association, Phh.adri.phia. We
commend to the attention of onr readers, the
notice of this benevolent Institution, with much
confidence, as we have reason to believe, from
oc.r business transactions with the managers,
that they are men of auWuntiul and honorable
character. The Institution is, no d unfit, capa
ble of doing i grent deal of good, and we wish
tho managers much success, in their very laud
able enterprise. ;
