Hies the follow in;? June.
Thri-B h not much' eliance of destroying
the nmje in the fly state; but curt cot we
itcslroy the lurvsc or pnpnf Many of the
!hrv(B remain in the tiirivcled grain and In
the chuff. These can ensily bo destroyed
by buruinn; the chuff and refuse grain, and
the larvte themselves can frequently b swept
ip in Iin jre qtiuiitiiics; these too should be
throw i) into the fire.
To destroy those in the groniul, we would
ruggest, fi'st, to burn tho Ktubhle. This is
known to be the best menu of destroying
the Hessian fly, which is also a great pc.st
to w heat growers. After burning over the
5tubbl, gang plow it about two iclw3 diej,
end let it remain iu this state all winter.
Thcu the following spring plow itwiihaMich
ijan double plow, turning the two" Inches of
looser surface" soil to the bottom of the fur
row, and tLea throw good fnrrow sis or
eight fnches deep on tho top of it.
The reasons for these suggestions arc ob
vious, burning the stubble would proba
bly kill a portion cf the larree, nud remove
the rcgctable matter which affords protec
tion to the pupa in tho soil during the wil
ier. Plowing the wheat stubble two inches
tferp would esposetfce- grabs to the frost,
and, thouglthpy ctrn staDtl a good' degree
f cold wheu lying dormant, Ihey would be
in neb more likely to he killed than when
protected by the stubble, weeds, clover, etc.
Those which-escape the fire and the frost
woold be liaried so deep that they will hard
1 y be able to gel' t o t he surftice. Of course,
the subsequent plowings- should not? be so
deep as to bring them to the surface:
The principal objection to tho method is
that we could not sow clover with the
wheat. But this can easily be obviated by
Bowing clover with barley, and even with
oats and Indian corn. The present prac
tice oigceuing the wneat wan clover is tbe
most TaToruble one that ttwtlJ be devised for
ttie propagation of the midge. - The clover
plants afford the pupa protection during J
the winter, and the ground Is undisturbed I
IB tic ZZ:Z. Where wheat ('jut has been
much affected with midge this season is
seeded with cJover, it might bo well to al
low the clover to get a good start next
r-piiug, and then plow it under, if possible
iu the way we have suggested, with a Mich
igan double plow, burying the soil and the
aiidge six inches below the surface. Tbie
would probably check them, if it did Hot kill
them. The land mig'it be pi tuted to corn,
snd manured in the bill if tbe snbsoilU poor.
We make these hasty suggestions for the
consideration of oor readers. W'v are con
fident that they have intelligence, perseve
rance, and skill, sufficient to cope with thia
fearful pest, and ihat if tbe methods recom
mended above prove useless, others will be
discovered, that will be more effectual.
Prevention of the Borer.
For protection agaiiibt this insect no
remedy Las jet beecn found iufalbble,
thongh it can be protected to a limited ex
tent in different ways, of which I will de
scribe the one I have found the most ben
fficiul. After plow iug and preparing the
soil in tbe early part or middle of May.
clear away the earth from tbe base, of the
trunk, examine the bark and remove all
insects ; prepare a whitewash of lime and
water, adding plenty of lime, so as to make
it aliuofrt a paste ; apply it with a brush,
f o as to give the exposed base of the trunk
a good coating. When this become per
fectly dry, take a small quantity of clay
soil, tocb as will pack well, and place it
around the base of tbe trunk, to the height
of three or four inches above tbe level of
tbe soil first removed. This prevents the
borer from depositing it eggs in the crown
of the roots, and even lower, wh'ch is diffi
cult to remove as well as more injurious to
the tree. This packing of clay should be
removed in the early part of November,
aed if any worns are in, they will easily be
found by exhudationof gum ; remove mem
by means of a sharp knife, which is deci
dedly the best instrument After this has
been done, place good mellow soil around
tbe base of the truuk, so as to leave no
place for water to stand and freeze duri.ig
the winter. This being annually repeated,
m one of the best preventive front the
T4ie following, from Donglas'Jerrold's

tho obstructions of the internal organs and stimu
lating them into heal.hy action, they renovate the
fountains of life and .lftor health courses anew
through the body, and the lick man is well again.
They are .dnpted to disease, and disease only, for
when taken by one in health they produce but lit

worms. Ita wan, sickly features tell yon without
disguise, and painfully distinct, that they are eating,
it life away. Its pinched-up nose and eare, anif
