Mr Dv.ar Mr, Editor, Will you be kind rnouirh to ner.
mil me, through the coluinus of the Ttlegrupk, touiler a tew
observations upon some occurrences which have lately trans-
pirru ueie, anu wuicu, iiju. piopeuy expilunea uu my part,
uiay tend, iu some uieaeure, to aliect my character. I need
not inform you that 1 have been located here some time ago,
by tbe Roman Oatnoiic Hiahop of Cleveland, with a view to
preach the gospel to hi. people here, and In impiove their
condition, muiaily and socially, Inasmuch a my humble ca
pacity would ahow.
for a considerable tiro a bond f reciprocal affection
seemed to exist between ni and my congregation (at least
apparently) ; they all seemed to be well, pleased with the ex
ercise of my nunistiy, and with the great pslna 1 had been
takiug to instruct their little ones, to inculcate opun thefr
tender ralnda tli principle of virtu, by representing to
tbem its reward, and to give them a hArrnr of vice, by In
fusing into their souls an idea ol th punishment awaiting it
It was usual with m almost on every ffunday, to preach
a aumion to uy dock ; at first cnieUy trnm the gospel of tbe
day. some time agio I began to ui.e an explanation of the
coiunianumenis ui uou. j usu ueeoou ine euujectof Keith.
1 was explaining to uiy audience the decision oi th Council
ol Vieiit regaruiua those abo weie supposed to be out of the
true Church, whiuii cimrcu tb Roman l attiolioa ttlieve to
be thelrown. Alter quoting some extiacta, 1 gave it as n.y
ooiniou. and ntv nin eonviction, that numbers of rood oon-
scienlious Protestauta would be saved, even according u the
liypotiieeta ol ui nomaa vauioiic cnurco being Ui true
obe.
Ihls Itncuaze of mine. Mr. Editor, fell like a thunderbolt
npon th ears of some of my audienc. It waa quite uovel
to tli. iu. lucy taixea over it. com said it waa liberal ;
other declared it was almost too much so, A;.
1 had Ji.coveied this ; aod th next bunday, instead of re
tracliug in tbe slightest uegiee on tittle of what I had
preaciied beloie 1 leiWrated my eentimenta, for a corrobora
tion ol opinion, I gave tbem t-e view of torn of the great-
t lumluaries tbate er abed lustre upon tbe Roman Catbnll
Church, lold tbem again and again that I would utter them
freely and fearlessly, aud regard'eaa or oonsequencee.
Fro in tbat vary moment a portion of my congregation hav
been determined to ruin me. They hav sent piles upon
pile of acccusetiour against me to th ttiaknp Theycliarged
me with associating with froteetanta. l hey said I should not
speak with a protestant minister ; that it was very strange
a Roman Catholic pri. st should do so that It waa anuuing l
should go and visit at the bouses of my protestant neighbors.
They found fault with m "for calling th proteatants my
brethren. When 1 preached in the church, one nf tbem in
united me at my longings for tb same provocation. I should
not omit to state, that 1 had to defend myaell before tb
Bishop of the charge nf preaching lalse doctrine ; but the very
same doctrine which I preached at Ashtabula, I ase-t.d be
fore his Lordship in Cleveland. It was the truth, aa I believe
and I should think my a If aa playing th hypocrite, II I preach
ed Differently. The mission of the true cbnreb of Christ upon
earth, la to enlighten the world, not to keep it in ignorance
and superstition.
. Had I eouvigiied tb whole world to perdition, excepting
the Roman 1'illiolica, perhaps my doctrine would have been
more palatable to the party who rebelled against rue. I will
not tieapaaa ura your tim and space much longer. I will
merely observe that tbl party to whom I hav alluded, hava
been doit.g all In their power ol lata to circulate a miliciou
report against my moral character, to defame and slander roe,
to lessen me in th estimation of tb public, f ome of them
bad the au'lactty to tell one of the peraona who went befor

Ma. EniToa, As ao individual, most sin
cerely do I thank Facio" for his very just re
buke of the N. T. Independent, in eulogising
such " QbriaUatri", as Stonewall Jackson. If
Jaekson was Dot a sioner, rtd with tbe blood
of good mea murdered by bis treason, and
black with tbe darkest crimes committed against
oar country aod humanity, then beaten only
koowe where we shall find sinners this side of
tbe Infernal regions. Benedict Arnold soogbt
to gratify his malice and rereoge by betraying
an Important fortress into the hands of a foreign
enemy, and be is execrated as ao unmitigated
traitor, so base tbat the halter would bare been
deemed mercy, compared with tbe claims of
justice. Jackson, after being fostered as a
favorite aod educated io the use of arms that
he might serve bis country as a loyal subject,
enters into a base conspiracy with otber trai
tors, to overthrow the government of his coun
try by plunging it into one of the most cruel,
fratricidal civil wars that ever cursed the world;
when, lol after death has laid the rebel in the
dust, suddenly he is canonised as an illustrious
saint, and his i: jured country called to admire
the manly virtues and eminent piety of tbe
fallen hero of the rebellion. Poor Arnold! no
record was made of bis prayers and ecclesiasti
cal staoding, and no monument will ever bless
his memory. But Jackson's pious record and
immortality is secured by the fact that Jbe waa
an Elder in the Presbyterian Church, very
strict and devout io observing all tbe rituals of
bis cred, and in saying bis prayers.
Kttw, Mr. Editor, I have no desire to fix the
locality of Stonewall Jackson io another world,
or pronounce on his eternal destiny. If be'
tween his fall and dying gasp he repented of bis
rebellion and found mercy, all good men will re'
juice, and adore the matchless grace of inBnite
compassion. Bat with " Facio" I do desire to
bear testimony against tbat pseodo sympathy
so prevalent in certain directions. The ten
dency is to impress the public mind with the
conviction tbat while Secession is wrong, "in
the ubilracl,' nevertheless the North is fighting
against some of the best men iu ' the nat'on
Indeed, while we are devoutly fasting and
praying at the North for the overthrow of re
bellio'n, a vaBt amount of piety and prayer at
the South is fasting and praying for its success
so that a part of the nation is represented as
petitioning heaven for the perpetuity of onr
glorious Union and Republican Government,
while a large part as devoutly are entering their
protest and sending np their remonstrance 1 1
Permit me to say, tbat prayer is not always
proof of piety, nor does it at ways sanctify the
cause it professes to commend to propitious
heuven. Some of old were devout, and offered
j money and long prayers, yet their piety drew
forth no approval from the heart-searching Sa
vior, but rather an exposure of their hypocrisy,
because it was a covering for their oppression
aod cruelty I
When Mabommed went forth to convert the
world, prayer aud the sword were united iu his
mission, yet Christendom offers no eulogy on
the piety of the False Prophet. When the
Crusuders sought to redeem the IIMy City
from the " Infidel,' heaven was besieged with
prayer that success might reward the sacrifice
and piety of the mnUitudo, yet Christendom
hurdly ready to endarse that mission as 'ap
proved of God . Few causes aio so bad but what
tbey have their religious devotees. Even
Southern Confederacy, conceived by the most'
corrupt politicians,. born and matured into ac
tivity by perjury, treason, stealing aud untold
hypocrisy, aud now reeking with the blood
loyal citizens, proclaims its fasts and thanks,
givings, multiplies its conference and prayer
meetings, aod even informs as of religious
awkeoings and of joyful pooverts.
Is the ki: gdom of heaven divided as well
the nation? Nay ! If God ia with tbe North
in this struggle, then lie is not with the S utb;
and Stonewall Jackson's piety, in opposing the
North, and that of bis brethren, must be
lo something else than tVMfA and tbe
spirit of God, for God is not the author
confusion and ontlawry and treason.
But I vih to offer another reason in opposi
tion to the course of tbe Independent upon
subject. It fritters away tbe crime of treason,
or renders it a comparative nality a mere civil
offense tbat scarcely affects moral character.
understand government to be a divine institu
tion, sustained by the sanctions of ull law, civil
and divine. A rebel, therefore, is a sinner
against God and his country. Can an intelli
gent man, then, act the part of a traitor and
in fellowship with God f Pray, then, what
the name of commoo sense can be do to vitiate
bis Christian character I Will law and justice
doom bim to the baiter, while piety exalts bira
to heaven ? If so, what a colony may be sent
off to Paradise some day wbeo Jefx. 11a vis
Co. expiate their civil crimes.
But the subject is too serious to indulge in
cheerful conceit, lue Independent is wrong.
Mr. Beecber must revise bis code of charity.
The man in whose garments are found the blood
of loyal freemen, shed by his bands while seek
ing to overthrow a government ordained
God and established lor tbe maintamance
liberty and justice, is not a Christian hero,
model of piety, whose rare Christian virtues
must obliterate from our minds all record
past crimes. Let the South and the North
member tbat good government is ordained
God, aod is for the punisbaient of evil doors,
aod they that resist shall receive to themselves
damnation. Unman theories aod creeds may fur
nish each anomalies as inward saints andootward
sinners, or pious praying generals fighting
oppression and rebellion, but tbe Good Book
provides for no such complex characters. ''By
their fruits ye shall know them," aoeme to
the rule of charity. Alt beyond is apocraphal.
Nay, a false charity, which " Saitb unto
