PHILADELPHIA, Nov., 1852
pKoTtir.R Maru-s t I arrived in this city at
10 o'tWk V- M. yestcrdny, in aafcty, although
tliecnrt run off the track when within ten
mile of this place. Fortunately no one was
injured. I had several good long talks with
slaveholders, and tlnveholding apologists. I
consider taking all things into account that
tho slave and his friend have rca'on to thank
God and take courage. One man, a slaveholder,
denied to mo that he was in. Thus you seo
they nro beginning to bo ashamed of it, at
lc:it nt tho North. I camo here whero it is
said there is little or no sympathy for tho slave,
but to toy the lcnst, thcrc is one righteous person.
I went with an old friend to hra' Rev. Mr.
Furnaco pardon mo for saying Reverend, It is
the first time fur years but really I do revere
man who will come out at tho sacrifice of all
ho has, except life, and plead the cause of
le down -trod Jen. Mr, Furnace preached from
these w0rd, The field is tho world." Ho
mode out clcnrly, '.hat pure and umlrGlcd re-
giun is, and nlnnys was, a prnctical thing;
nml to iii.ikc sure of eternal life, men tnuit do
as they wniiUl he doilc hy. In short, ho gnve
one of the most Imld snd fcarlcu discourses,!
menn out and out auli-luvcry, conic-outrr ser
mons, I ever heard from mans' lips. Ten such
men would invc the city, for ccrtuin, and I
think three would.
I refill to think, ns Albert linrm said, that it
n in the hnmls of tho church to abolish or
retain slavery.
Now If the Clergy havo such tremendous
power, what icnrlul rcsposilalitics rest upon
tliein. As said Iriend (iarrinnn, what a man
enslaving, war-makind, oath taking, sin-perpet-
untiug rrlii;ion it is, that is preached and prac
tice in this country, llut out of their ruins,
they nro all to be destroyed. This Mr. Gar

truly has that prophoi y come to pass, snd is

A Southern Verdict.
Tlic Soiitlirrn Itaptitt, publnhcd st Cliarlei-

paper in the whole South. W'e take its cen
sures, its counsel-', its coinincndatinns, its ap
peals, ss always dictated nnd controlled by an
hoocl conviction of truth snd duty, and emi
nently free from tha iuttuenco of human fear or
favor. Speaking of the attack upon Mrs. Stowo
and Mr. Hccchcr by I)r- Vurker, this paper
says, under ditto or tljtoncr "0 : laileptudttu.
"A long, and we think, satisfactory vindica-
cntion of Mr. Krccher has como out in tho col-
umna of Tht I nt'ipenileiit. It appears that let
ters wero written in Dr. Parker's study by Mr.
lleeclier, snd that they wrro accepted by Dr.
Parker as a substantial expression of his view s.
Dr. Parker probably supposed theso letters
would bo again submitted to his Inspection, and
be revised, before they should bo published as
his, whilo Mr. Ilcechcr presumed that they had
received his full acceptance, snd had them pub
lished seeordingly. Tho letters nro not forger

Mr. Jlccchcrand Mrs. Stnxe are, wo doubt not
possessed nf a high and delicate sonso of honor,
incapablo of such baseness at hat been ascribed
to thcin. Tiny aro Christians, high-spirited,
enthusiastic, dashed with genius, courageous
on all subjects, and ultra on tho suhjoct of sla
very. We oro glad to say thut this liut item it
the only objection which wo can find sguinst
them, and to add thut we entertain infinitely
more respect for even a conscientious opponent
of slavery, than for a timid and shuffling advocate
and simply on tho ground that the latter indicts
more injury on our csuse than tho former by
any possibility can. Tho lame apology of the
latter seems like a virtual admission, that the
institution has inauporablc evils in it, while the
somber portrsiture of tho other, exaggerated as
the likenoas may be, sometimes admonishes us
of evils wl:ich need t be corrected, and moves
us to. engage in the work of reformation."

To the friends of Free Discussion.
The undersigned solicitous for the ad

AM) l.NFIXF.NCi; OF TIIF. JF-Wlrill
AND CHRISTIAN SCRIPTLRF.S.
This invitation U not given to any particu
lar class of Philosophers, Theologians or
Thinkers, but it in good faith, extended to
nil who feel nn. interest in the examination
of thu (piestiotifl tihovn slated. There mo
many who lielicve that a snperimlurul Reve
lation (ma been given to man ; many others
w ho deny this, and a large number w ho nre
nllliclcd with perplexing doubts trembling
between thu silent skepticism of their reason
nud tho fenr of nbsoltito denial. In issuing
n cull for n Cuuvcntion we have iu view the
correction of error by which party soever
entertained, nud the relief of those who stnnd
between doubt nnd fear from their embnrras
sing position.
Some mny have no doubt that tho Jewish
nud Christian Scriptures hnve subserved on
important end, nml yet believe thut their
mission is nearly completed mid must be
superceded by a new dispensation ; snino
may believe that their influence tins been
prejudicial iu every respect, nnd thut they
htivo been n curse rather limn o blessing to
mankind, others may believe them a perfect
record of the Divine will to mnn good in
tho pnst nml for nil time to come ; and others
still may deny tho plenary inspiration of the
Iliblc, discarding much of the Old Testa
ment, nud receiving most or nil of the New.
Still such diversity of opinion instead of
prejudicing the interest nud good results
which ought to attend such o Convention,
will rather tend lo increase its interest and
enhance its value to the cause of Trulli.
Doubtless a freo intereliango of thought is
the best mode of exciting inquiry nud of ar
riving ut thu Truth.
" lie who hat a Truth and keeps it.
Keeps wl.ut ii"t to lum belongs ;
But perforins u Ii-.h action
And his Icllow mortal wrong'."
We invite, therefore, nil w ho feel nn inte
rest in this ipicHtioii, without distinction of
sex, color, sect, or party, to come together,
that wo mny sit down liko brethren in n
communion before tho nltar of intellectual
nml spiritual Freedom.

"What made the Democrats so glad!"
At the torch-light procession passed, on tho
evening oi 10th, little boy inquired, "What
made tho Democrats so glad i"
Thry'c glad, my boy, because their might
Once more has triumphed over right,
That Slavery's blighting, nuldow stain
Four more long years shall still remain.
That four more years the slave must tod
In fottcrs, on Columbia's snl.
Thcy.ro glnd, my boy, that slavery, dire,
Like yonder wreathing chain of fire,
Mia'.l twiuo around tho million hearts,
Till the last spark of hope departs ;
tven fetter freemen st tho north
To do the bidding of the south.
They're glad there's one elected in
Pledged to perpetuate this sin I
To stamp in dust the rights of man,
Put christian duty under ban,
To send the flying bonduinn back,
ith northern blood-hounds on his track.
They're glad, my boy, that Clay mis-spent
His mighty energies, and bent
The servile knee before that power
That brought our country this dark hour.
Think of the race he might havo run-
Think of the good ho might havo done.
They're glad a Webster tUeps in night,
A recreant to tho truth, and right.
That no despairing, trembling slavo
Shall drop s tear upon his gruvc.
Though Boston's domes arc robed In black,
Horror, they cannnot bring him back.
Remember, boy, their knell will toll
When freedom's surging waves shall roll ;
A few moro triumphs such ss this,
Will end, stlsst, their boyish bliss.
