In 1134 tbe Po was frozen from Cremona to the sea; the wine sacks were burst, and the trees split by the action of the frost, and with immense noise. In 123G tbe Danube was frozen to the bot tom, and remained loDg in that state. In 1316 the crops wholly failed in Ger many ; wheat, which some years before sold in England at 6s, the quarter, rose to 2. In 1303 the crops failed in Scot land, and such a famine ensued that the oor were reduced to feed on grass, and many perished miserably in the fields. The successive winters of 1432-3-4 were uncommonly severe. In 1368 the wine distributed to the soldiers was cut with hatchets. In 1683 it was excessively cold. Most of the hollies were killed. Coaches drove along the Thames, the ice of which was" eleven inches thick. In 1709 occurred the cold winter; the frost penetrated about three yards into the ground. In 1716 booths were erected on the Thames. In 1712 and 1744 the strongest ale in England exposed to the air was covered in less than fifteen min utes with ice an eight of an inch thick.. In 1809 and as-tin in 1S12, the winters were remarkably cold. In 1814 there was a fair on the frozen Thames. Oliver Optic's Magazine fur April. Bright, liamUomc and entertaining, this Magazine appears in advance of all i In another place he adopts the start ling and probably correct view that to bees and other insect "we owe the beau ty of our eardens, the sweetnos of our fields. To them flowers are indebted for their scent and color nay for their very existence, in its preset form. Not only have the present shape and outlines, the brilliant colors, the sweet scent, and the honey of flowers been gradually devel oped through the unconscious selection cxerci.ted by insects, ljut the very ar rangement of tbe colors, the circular bands and radiating lines, tbe form, size, and position of the petals, the relative situation of the stamens and pistil, arc all arranged with reference to the visits of injects, and in such a manner as to insure the grand object which these vis its are destined to effect." Lubbock has also continued his obser vations on the intelligence of insects. He confirms the conclusions presented last year to the Linnxan Society that bees can distinguish colors. He then recounts some experiments on the sense of smell possessed by bees, on the power of recognizing their own companions, and on the different occupations of dif ferent bees, mentioning observations which seem to show that the bees act as nurses during the first few weeksof their life, and only subsequently take to col lecting honey and pollen. He also re cords a number of experiments on ants, wliiidi fprtninli sppninil In slum flint others, with a fre,h installment of Oliver. whatevcr mav thp wlth bees,ant3 vyjJkiu ;?i'u.u vsuir.m iiuui, ur, aiiu; j XEOS1IO VALLEV GRAXGE. Harper's liarley. If we know anything about farming, the agriculturists of this county would do well to give some of their attention to the raising of barley. It is a crop which has been wholly neglected here, but it is one for which there is always a ready market, and which has for years commanded a great deal better price per bushel than gtvheat. Barley will yield on an average forty to fifty bushels per acre, while wheat yields but twenty to twenty-five bushels. The market price of barley jn St. Louis is one dollar and twenty to one dollar and fifty-cents; wheat sells for ninety-five cents to one dollar and fifteen cents per bushel. One acre of barley will bring at least sixty dollars right here in Brunswick, at the brewery. From an acre of good wheat, at the highest market price in St. Louis, Williard ! lt ,vou'1' be impossible to realize more Thc tnan twenty dollars, it will tlius be poems arc all attractive, and the illus trations numerous and striking. Brmmricler. 1874 hardly half a crop. As a conse sequence, corn and pork have ruled high and are now very scarce. The granaries of the country are about emptied, and there will be no old corn on hand to compete with the crop that is to be gathered in 1873. No matter how favor able a season we may have, and no mat ter how large a crop the operations of the year may close, the supply of corn is not at all likely to exceed the demand, I and the farmer mav be sure of being made to gross 1.700 pounds at three years, the others, if ever, at five or six years; one consuming as much grass and requiring the same care as the other. I sold last fall, at the fair at Murfreesboro, a one-year old filly for $400 greenbacks ; she was a thoroughbred, and cost no more to raise her to that age than a mongrel or a mule the only lulditioual cost being the first produce. I refused $250 for her second fold at five months Trjaiilantin-; Trees. There is no mode that we ever tried so effectual in transplanting tomato, cab bage, cautelope, or any other tender plants from the hot-bed or from one place to another, as to prepare a vessel filled with manure water and rich soil, about the consistency of thin mush, with which the roots of the plant should be well coated, and set in a hole made with a round piece of wood or dibble. After being rather firmly planted, moisten again with manure water. We have never failed in any transplanting, when done in this way, and the trouble is very slight. IGENTS. ChangChangsells at sight. The experiences of last year should teach our farmers not Io plant corn fidtf , .especially, of late corn, near vMitcr wheat, or so to protect them by fendies as to keep off these summer pests. If these precepts should be generally observed, an immense corn crop may be expected, such as will fill Cr.iCKETS. It seems that from increase the wealth of Jbc .country. t Id Winters. It is a very common remark during excessive cold weather, such as we have had occasionally during jtlie pa-t winter, that the winters arc getting colder, just as it is common to hear on the other hand, during an excessive warm summer that the summers are getting hotter. To those who indulge the theory that there is danger of the earth freezing up and becoming uninhabitable, the following data of the weather in olden times, as well as comparatively modern, may be interesting and consoling. Speaking of cold weather in Europe .a .London paper says that in 301 the lack Sag. ,was entirely frozen over. In 733 not only the bitekeea.but.the straits of Dardanelles were frozen over; the snow .jn -soma places ross fifty feet hljh. ln-832 the great rivers of Europe, the Danube, Elbe, etQv were so hard frozen as to .bear heavy iagonsforamonth. J.n,8o0 the Adriatic wf frozen. In 991 everything was frozen, tne crops totally twelve to fifteen per cent, of the orchid of the lowlands are fertilized by Lepi doptera, while from sixty to eighty per cent, of Alpine orchids are fertilized by the same kind of insects. This corrobo raUv, he says, his view that the predom inant frequency of butterflies in the Alpine region must havc influenced the adaptation of Alpine flowers. Muller has also shown the wonderful modification brought about in the legs and mouth parts of bees by their efforts in fertilizing flowers. Lubbock's charming little book on 'Briti-di Wild Flowers considered in Ke- lation to Injects has just appeared. He says that while from time immemorial we have known thai flowers are of great importance to insects it is only compar atively late that we have realized how important insects are to flowers. "For it is not too .much to say that if, on the one ;Iand, flowers are in many cases necessary to the existence of insects, insects, oh, the other hand, are still more indispensible to the very existence of flowers v....There has thus been an interactions insects upon flowers and A correspondent of the Country Gentle man says that when none comes with your dripping pan, any tinman can make one for you. Or if not, your own men folk3 can manufacture one for you out ot hard wood strips half an inch square two, one foot long, and four eight inches long, for cross pieces. Nail these together an inch from each end and use them for baking all kinds of meat. They must be carefully washed every time and dried, As a rule, warm water and a soft cloth are all that is required to keen r?Iass in good condition; but water bottles and wine decanters, in order to keen them bright must be rinsed out with a little muriatic acid, which is the best substance for removing the "fur" which collects in them. The acid is far better than ashes, and, or shot ; for the ashes and sand scratch the glass, and if any shot is left in by accident, the lead is poisonous. Richlv-cut glass must lie cleansed and poluhed with a soft brush, upon which a very little fine chalk or whiting is put; by this means the luster and brilliancy are preserved. lAllnrl. nnrl fumin. enrl nAc:fAnM .1 ..1 I , " r-""- nnscu of flower3 upon ;nsects resHitinc in the the vear.
