C. McCuity lots. Tho gas sand was struck in tho well at 2 o'clock Monday. This is tho brief story of the result of tho eitj's experiment in drilling a gas woll to furnish fuel for tho elec tric light and water works power house. While it was balieved that there was a good piospect for finding gas, only tho penetrating power of tho drill itselt could cei lainly determine tho fact, and tho drill Monday sctt'ol tho question. Tho well is on the C. C. MeCurty lots back of hts eiitriugo factory at tho corner of South and Uroadwny streets and for tlio uso of the land Mr. McCarty will gel what gas he wants in his fuctory and house. Uc foro tho well wtts beginning to blow he camo out of his shop grinning and de clared tho drillers could quit when they saw lit, thero was enough gas developed for his use. Gradually the drill went down, tho screw showing that a foot of lino had been uald out. and Iho draft from tho middlo of tho earth grew stronger, Wowing tho looHe ends of ropo about tho drill and becoming audible as a long drawn out sigh. A pobblo Hew Into" tlio air, quickly followed by others. Then a shower of soft, bluo Btoncs jumped into tlio uir and foil thickly about the opening. The rush of tho gas was distinctly audiblo and a fttJinbcr of people gathetcd to watch tio process of finding gas. By this time the screw hud all been paid out and it was necessary to draw up tho drill and take another hold, somo six feet higher on the tope. As It w'asknown thattlu'iu was mud and water at the bottom it was determined to pull the drill and let the well "clean , itself." So the big windlass was eon- j neeted with tho engine and the long ropo hauled up lScforo half its length had appeared the tope was all muddy and tho rushing gas blew the mud iy i.atur from It in a black spray, high Into the top of the derrick. The main driller, Mr. Hume, stood by und struck tho ropo with n dub, thus jar ring more mud loose. Tho pulley at tho top of tho derrick squeezed mud from tho ropo as it passed over, and tho tight coils on tho windlass dripped anil oozed withsliino. AbluekinUtllew to tho top of tho derrick and rained down on everything. Thou tho drill appeared, a now bit was put on und tho work resumed. As tho wind wjs in tho southwest and tho woll eloso to several houses, police visited tlio neighboihood and had llros and lightn extinguished lest tho wandering gas should Ignite, destroying the neighborhood and tlio derrick. Wl'.LL OTNISHI.I TIIIISIIAV Tho now process of shutting down is to attach a shut-oil" valvo to the tub ing. Everything was cleared for ac tion TuesJUy .in J a gooa sized crowd watehoJ tho workmen wrantlo with tho gas. They were able to set tho cap on tho tubing but couldn't turn It and make tho threads catch. Four stout men woiked with It in ain Jo'half an hour, llich time the cup slipped oil tho tubing oven slightly, a powerful blast of gas struck tho man on that sido, knocked hats right ana left, and blow ilio workmen back from thopost.s. In ait they iought, tho floujl from the bowol. of the eaith screeched and howled in tigony and fought wita tho sirug.'Jing men for its liberty. Finally tho struggle was given up and Ulio men uwiiltod other instruments bsfoio trying to fasten down tho well. A car of pipo is lieru for tho well and as soon us possible tho mains will bo laid and the gas piped to the river whoro It will blaze beneath tho boilers which will lurnlsh steam to drive tho elcotrto light dynamos and the wuter works pumps. Another View of Pauperism. Editou ItixHSTKK. Wo will say In nnswor to William Cunningham's let ter his view has moro of humanity' in it. Why could not some of our heavy farmers build a tenant houso on his farm tako somo family out and lot them raise garden and poultry on tho shares. It would save tho farmer's wife who has to work hard six days out of tho week becauso sho cannot get any help. Wo know of somo men with families who hlro out to a farmer tho man working for $10 a month, tho woman working for her and tho child ren's board. They stay through corn plowing and haying then thoy go back to town and tho county has to help them. It Is better for them to nil so their famllj together than It would be to send them to tho count) house, for the fatl.er might think when onco his family Is a county charge to let them alone. It Is not every one that Is a pauper by choice. Some never did agree with work, and somo poor women work ami keep starvation out of the home until thoy are worn out, and then it does not seem right to break up her humble Utile homo and tear all sho has on earth away from her and mako her last dnj s homeless. The Good Hook says "The poor ye have alwajs with you" so let us bo us charitable as we can bo to them. Wo have no sympathy for a big stout boy or girl who has a relative that needs help that will not holp them, take hold ofthe Golden Key to success, Jand when they are young and stout tho county has no duty to support them or any one that can support themselves. There should bo a law compelling every ablo bodied man to earn his own living. No boy or girl who is Idle Is compolled to bo so because tho cry of to-day Isnioro holp Indoors and out. lint tho aged and sick should receive charity and the lazy should bo by law compelled to work. The mnn solemnly promised that ho would not. 'Hie governor looked doubtful, mused a few minutes and said: "You will go back on the river nnd bo a mate again, I suppose?"
