We had rrown so expert that we resolved to
.better ourselves and return to London, which
"we did somewhere about the end of February
or the begiMtog or aiarcii, isoo. we put-ap
at a IKtie iaa in the bsroagb: and. before a
weet was over, found ourselves engaged by
Mr. James Rice, ef the Belvedere Tavern, at a
a salary or seven poBsca a week, now, this
was a great advance upon all our previous
gains ; and the Tavern was by bo means a bad
place for the foairding of a theatrical reputa
tion. Situated btrf-way between the west end and
tbe city, surrounded by a densely populated
neighborhood, and lying in tbe very path of the
osMibaees, this establishment was one of the
meet prosperous of its class. There was a
theatre and a concert-room, and a garden,
where dancing, and smoking and rifie-ehootfag
and supper-eating were going en from eiebttill
twelve o'clock every Bighl all through the sum
mer, which made the place a special favorite
with the wet king classes.
Here, then, we were engaged, (Griffiths and
I,) with a promise that oar salary should be
raised if we proved attractive ; and raised it
soon was, for we drew enormously. We
breagbt oat tbe pereave and the ceiling busi
ness ; came down in the midst of firewarks,
from a platform higher that the roof of the
theatre ; and, in short, did everything that ever
yet was done in oar line aye, and did it well,
too, though perhaps it is not my place to say
ao. At all events, tke great colored posters
were pasted up alt over the town, and our sal
ary was increased to fifteen poinds a week ;
and the gentleman who writes about tbe '.lays
in the Sun J ay Stub was. pleased to observe
that Ihete was no perteraance in London half

at all, is more than I caa undertake to tell, for
my Was were all cecfused, and I only remenv
berlhatlkisedher,and feat very hippy, and
that when Mrs. Morristm cam into the room,
she found me with mv arm clasped round my
darling's waist. I scarcely know when it was
that I first noticed the change in John Griffiths;
but, that it was somewhere about this time, I
am tolerably certain, it is hard to put looks
into -words, and to make account of trifles that,
after all, are matters ef fee Hug more than mat
ters of fact ; but others saw the change as well
as myself, aBd no one could help observing that
be grew to be more silent aad unsociable than
ever; he kept away from home as much as
possible. He spent all Sundays oat, starting
away the first thing after breakfast, and not
coming back again till close upon midnight.
He even put an rod to our old friendly custom
ef walking home together after our night's
work was over, aad jeieed a sort of tap-room
club that was kept up by a dozen or so of Idle
feliowe, belonging to tbe theatre. Worse than
this, he scarcely exchanged a word with me
from morning till Bight, even when we were at
meals. He. watched me about the room as if
I bad been a thief. And rKatetimes, though I
am sure I never wronged him willingly in ray
life, I caught bim looking at me from under
those black brows of bis as if be bated me.
More than once I had laid my hand upon his
sleeve as he was harrying away on Sundays,
or nursing oil toward tae club-room at nigot,
aad said, " Griffiths, bare you got anything
against me ?" -or, " Griffiths, won't you come
home to a fritedly glass with me to-fcight?"
But he either shook me off without a word, or
muttered some ealky denial that sounded more
like a curse than a civil answer; so I got tared
of peacemaking at, last, and let him go bis
own way, and choose his own company.
The summer was already far advanced, and
our engagement at the Belvidere had well nigh
ended, when I began to buy furniture, and Ally
to prepare ber wedding things. Matters con
tinued tbe sume with John Griffiths ; bat, when
the day was fixed, I made up my mind to try
him oftce again, and invite bim to the church
and tbe dinner, ir.e circumstances or mat in
vitation are as clear in my memory as if the
whole affair had taken place this morning.
It was ob the twenty-ninth of July. (lam
particular about dates,) and there bad teen a
general call to rehearsal at one o'clock that
day. Tbe weather was warm and hazy, and
I started early that I inht not go ;n late or
tired ; for I knew that, what with the rehearsal-
and the new piece, and the Terrific IltscetU, 1
should have enough to do before ray day's work
wis over. Tbe consequence was that I arrived
about twenty minutes too soon. Tbe gardens
had ft dreary look by day-light ; but they were
pleasanter, anyhow, than tbe theatre; so I
loitered up and down among tbe emoky trees,
and watched the waiters polishing tbe stains
otf the tables in the summer-beuses, and
ohr hnip ahahbv the fountains looked wben
their were' not playing, aad what miserable1
.imfriflr concerns were Stalactite Caves and
tie Coimoraraie Grottoes, and all the other at
tractions which looked so tine oy we iignt oi
colored lamps asd fireworks.
Well, just as I was sauntering on, turning
these things over in my mind, whom should I
see In one of the summer-houses but John
Griffiths. He was lying forward upon the ta
ble, with his face resting Beon his clasped
hands, sound asleep. An empty ale-bottle and
glass stood close besiae mm, ami uio d -

in him though hia face was hidden: so I went
up aod:tm-lted bim smartly on the shoulder.
" A fine morning, John," says I. " I thought

of posturing arid a balloon ascent all in one.
At some distance below the car was to be se

fra artwork was called tbe trapeze. From the
lower pole, or the base of this triangle, one of
us was ta be suspended, with a ligature of
strong leather attached to bis ankle, la ease of

this man ascending head downward, the other
was to catch him by the hands and go us also,
having, if be preferred it, some band or other
to bind him to his companion. In this position
we were then to go through our customary per

"All this," aaid Mr. Rice, "sounds much
more dangerous than it really is. The motion

He looked at rae as he said this, with a sort

came over bis face as I spoks these words. It
seemed to turn all the currents of my blood. I
could not understand it then but I understood
it well enough afterward.
Well, Mr. Rice -was nightly pleased to find

the matter. Mr. Stains and his famous War

I gave her the only consolation in mv power by

this, she grew calmer. On all other points I
kept my own counsel, as you may be certain ;
and as to John lrimtes, I saw less of him than
