JHISSISSII'I'I POLITICS COLONEL
VAN IT. HANKING.
In the Appeal of Sunday last It was
announced tb&t this gentleman had
been nominated as the Democratic can
didate for congress in the second Mi
sissippi district. The contest was be
twesn Manning and Taylor, and was
characterized by fierce bitterness. But
we are gratified to see the party concen
trating on Colonel Manning. He ia a
gentleman whose capacity, ability, in
tegrity and conrago cannot be impeach
ed. He possesses talent of the highest
order, and as a member of congress will
utter no sentiment and give no vote
that will antagonize the true Interests
of tho people of Missif s'ppL The rivalry
in the second district has been ani
mated, but it is gratifying to know that
Colonel Manning will not be seriously
damaged by a canvass in which his
claims were passionately contested.
Colonel Taylor withdrew his name, and
we predict without venture that in the
contest no more valuable service will
bo rendered the Democratic cause
than by Colonel Taylor. It Is only
by harmony that the Democracy
of Mississippi can retain the
rwr iitoj- coourcd la NorBoiOer last.
Tli 9 Democratic legislature was char
actered by reform. It abolished all
supernumerary offices, and retained only
such as were indispensable to thejproper
administration of the State government.
In three months after the State of Mis
sissippi had been reetored to the right
ful control of the people, retrenchment
and reform was found in every depart
ment, and as the remit of Democratic
ascendancy taxes were greatly reduced.
This reform and retrenchment is a guar
anty that the same party, if continued
in power, will give permanent peace
and prosperity to a State that has been
nearly ruined by misrule and corruption.
The people of Mississippi have learned
In sorrow what Ridical rule means, and
they will not surely remand the State
back to the extravagance and profligacy
of the party that will again entail upon
them the very burdens which
the Democracy have lifted from
their shoulders. The Demooracy
of Mississippi have faithfully fulfilled
every pledge made by them during the
canvas3 last fall, and they wi'I retain
the advantage already gained If they are
true to themselves-, and maintain a com
pact, impregnable organization in every
county in the State. Colonel Van H.
Manning is the Democratic nominee for
coDgress In the second district, and Is
worthy of the enthuaiastic support of his
party. The patriotism of Colonel Tay
lor, In withdrawing from the canvass
and giving his support to hia successful
rival, ii another tribute to the nobleness
and generosity of his nature. He Is of
that class who can rise above defeat ard
declare anew his devotion to the party
of which he is an honored member. Hia
manly course throughout the whola con
test has bound those who were his friends
at first to him by hocks of steel, and
won the high regard and sincere friend
ship of those who opposed his nom
ination. With his record in public
life, aud his character as a private citi
zen without spot or blur, there Is yet a
brilliant future before him. The people
are not slow to appreciate worth, hon
esty, fidelity to paity and principle, and
they know thst Colonel Taylor has been
true to them and their interests, and he
will surely receive his reward. With
union and harmoDy and such self-abnegation
as has been displayed by Colonel
Taylor, the Democracy of Mississippi
will triumph; without these Mississippi
wia ne reclaimed by the Radicals and
left alone to writhe in her pain until
Time, the repairer, shall make a new
soil, and develop a new growth upon
the destruction and the decay of the
present order of things.
means battle, and the Demoorata must
prepare for the contest Our danger is
in the apathy of our party. All concede
that Tennessee will give to Tilden and
Hendricks a majority of near fifty
thousand. The danger is not in the
Presidential election, but in our county
elections, which occur on tho third of
August, and In view of the fact that
Tennessee Is the flrat of the States in
wliich an election will be held prior
to the Presidential election, the im
portance of oar party casting its full
strength in the August elections cannot
be overestimated. If we meet with dis
aster in our elections, it will exerciso a
depressing and most Injurious effect in
the great national struggle. On the
other hand, if we roll up the majcrlty to
whioh we are entitled, a corresponding
enthusiasm will certainly follow. We
therefore exhort the Democracy of Ten-
netsse to labor for victory in the August
election. Let not the Democratic exocu
tlvc committee for Shelby county be
deceived: let not the nominees for the
county offices flatter themselves into the
belief that they will have no opposition.
They will have formidable opposition
by candidates secretly nominated on the
eve of the election. We warn the De
mocracy of Shelby as to its duty. The
organization of a Hayes and Wheeler
club to-night Is the breeze that precedes
the storm, the trickling of the drop ere
the bursting of the fountain. Let, there
fore, no time be lost in perfecting the
Democratic organization, and In the
adoption of measures that will secure
victory. Let the time between this and
the election be industriously employed
by every true Democrat in arousiDg His
fellow-citizens to the Importance of
bringing out a full vote for Anderson,
for Logwood, for Rawlings, and for Gor
don. Let there be such a
rally of tho strength of the par
ty on the third of August
as the importance of the occasion de
mands. Let us thunder forth a sweep
ing and glorious Democratic victory. It
cannot be that Shelby county will re
turn to Radicalism, which all other sec
tions are leaving in disgust. The nom
ination of Tilden and Hendricks has in
spired the Democracy throughout the
Union with confidence, and Shelby
must do her duty.
and property-holders of the State, ac
cording to the value of the property

We favor such legislation as will en

tries of the county, sustain and develep
a liberal and comprehensive system of
free public instruction, ana Dy mese
measures Increasing the mineral and
material wealth of the State, and re
moving the frightful scenes of crime
and disorder, and lightening the burden
of taxation.
Having full confidence In the ability
and integrity of Governor James D. Por

Corinth, Miss., July A. To-day has
been a glorious day. The people of old
Tishomingo and Alcorn united to cele
brate the one hundredth anniversary of
the independence of our country. In the
morning speeches were delivered by
Colonel A. D.DHworth, Colonel C. W.
M'Cord, George S. Inge and Judge J.
W. Kilpatrick. The barbecue was served
in the old-fashioned way. The Iuka
and Corinth base ball club3 played a
match game for the championship of
North Mississippi, and me score stood
twenty-two to flrteen in favor of the
Corinth boys. After the game was
j layed the people left for their homes,
well pleased with tho day.

The Paris Intelligencer thinks that
"the Democracy of Shelby acted wisely
not to permit any differences among
themselves at this critical juncture. We
learn from William J. Sykes, who was
present and took an active part in the
meeting being one of the committee
on resolutions that the feeling In favor
of Governor Poiter's nomination was
overwhelming, there not being, so far as
ho knew, a single delegate appointed
who would not vote for bim. The ob-
ect of the Shelby county Dsmocraoy is
to represent their own feelings, and at
the same time aot in harmony with the
Democracy in other parts of the State."
PLEASANT HULL,, MISS.
Grand Centennial Plcnlc-Tlldcn nnd
Hendricks Indorsed Colonel Van
II. Manning for Congress.
From an Occasional Correspondent of the
Appeal.
Pleasant Hill, July 6. A erand
Centennial picnic and ratification meet
ing was held at this place on the Fourth
of July. , The meeting organized by call
ing VV. J. Wllroy to the chair and ap
pointing V. A. Marshall secretary. By
request of the chair, the old veteran
Democrat of DeSoto county. Dr. W. H.
M'Car&n. briefly explalnod the obiect of
the meeting, and on motion the chair
was authorized to appoint a committee
of three to draft resolutions expressive
of the se'ise of the meeting; whereupon
the chair appointed the following gen
tlemen: Dr. w. H. M'Cargo, C. A. Mar
shall and S. J. Dickey, who submitted
the following resolutions, which were
unanir.ously adopted:
Resolved, That the action of the Na
tional Democratic convention at St.
Louis, in nominating Tilden and Hen
dricks for th 9 highest offices in tho gift
of the nation, meets with our most
hearty approval, for in them we recog
nize two standard-bearers who will
faithfully represent the great National
Democratic party and the best interests
of the nation.
Beiolved, That the platform of prin
ciples set forth by the party nominating
these standard-bearers are the true prin
ciples and proper exponents of the great
National Democratic party, and also
meets with our hearty approval.
Resolved, That in the selection of
Colonel Van H. Manning by the district
congressional convention, recently held
at Oxford, we recognize a man in every
way qualified and fit to represent ua in
the congress of the United States; and
while, he was not the first choice of
some of us, yet we have the moot un
bounded confidence in his Integrity, and
we do hereby pledge to him our united
support at the ballot-box.
Resolved, That these proceedings be
published In the Jackson Clarion, the
Press and Times at Hernando, and the
Memphis Appeal.
COVINGTON, TE5NESS13E.
Albany, July 1. Governor Tilden
Has about as much business upon his
hands as he can attend to, and will not
go to Philadelphia on the fourth, state
ments to that effect being quite as imag
inative as some of the recent interviews
with him. He does not care to go to the
Centennial as a patt of a public display,
but will be content to go at a later day
as a private citizen. Returning dele
gates visited him throughout the morn
ing hours to-day, and a bushel basket of
mail matter engaged his attention In the
intervals. Among the letters and tele
grams it is note worthy that a number
bavo been received from schools, Sun-daj-3chools,and
clergymen of various re
ligious denominations. One of the lat
ter from a clergyman in Washington
says he has traveled thirty thousand
miles in two years and has felt the pub
lic pulse, which beats very strong
ly for reform; and another from
a superintendent of a Sunday
school in Cincinnati asks for a senti
ment from the reform governor which
may be read to his Sunday-school, while
a third from a Jewish rabbi recalls with
tnanKS a contribution wnich the gover
nor had made to Mount Sinai hcspital
some years ago. Forty-four pupils of a
business college in Poughkeep3ie sant
their congratulations in a telegram, and
say they will work for his election.
Among the other telegrams recelved,one
was from Ex-Governor Thomas Swann,
of Maryland; Mr. Aiken, Mr. Magrath,
and five other ex-governors of South
Carolina; Judge PJnckney, of Mary
land; Columbus Alexander, of Wash
ington; John G. Thompson, of Onio;
8enator Casserly, Congressman Bovee,
C. C. Walker, and others, some of
whom are Republicans. The friends of
the governor who conducted the cam
paign for him at St. Louis will probably
arrive home on Monday.
GERMAN SUPPORT.
New Yorker Hand:l3 Zeltung.
Our sympathies In the approaching
struggle are with Samuel J. Tilden, not
because, but notwithstanding he is the
nominee of the Democratic party. It is
not with hollow phrasss, but by weighty
deeds, that Tilden has proved himself
the representative of reform. But what
is Hayes? Ho is the nominee of a party
which claims indemnity for eight years
of misgovernment on the strength of its
great services in tne past; which de
mands the confidence of the people
witnouc ouering guarantees ror tne fu
ture, for it has as good as thrown on one
side the only practical reformer in its
ranks, Benjamin Briatow. If words ex
press thoughts, tben the Republican
P9rty in its entirety is completely iden
tified with Grant ism, otherwise it could
not, in its platform, have offered the .
warmest thanks to the national admin
istration, and particularly to President
Grant, for "honorable fulfillment of
pledges." Under existing circum
stances, the victory of the Re
publican candidate could only
be desirable if the opposition, in ltd
nominations and its declaration of prin
ciples, offered something absolutely
worse; ana mis is not tne case. Tilden
and Hendricks are auita as honorable.
