NEW YORK, Jan. 26. At the sale of
the assets of the Defender Manufacturing
Company, a subsidiary of the II. P. Claf
Hn Company, the only bid submitted was
that made by IJ AV. Jones, represent
ing the Mercantile Stores Corporation,
His bid was 21 per cent, upon all claims
filed or which may ha filed on or beforo
February 18. 1915, the last day allowed
by the court for tho filing of claims.
Mr. Jones represented creditors to the
amount of Jl.42fi.Ca2. It Is expected that
Judge Hand will approve the bid within
a few days.

Board in Washington.
WASHINGTON, Jan. IS. In order to
ascertain the exact business conditions
among the several reserve banks, the Fed
oral Reserve Doard today telegraphed all
Federal Ileservo agents to come to Wash
ington on February J. for a conference.
At the meeting an exchange of Ideas be
tween the men "In the field" and tho
members of the Federal Reserve Board
will be presented. A number of matters
ot Interest that have proved "hard nuts
to crack," as a member of the board ex
pressed It today, will be discussed.
Not only Is the meeting called for tho
purpose of discussing the most Important
phases of reserve banking, but It will be
open to suggestions from the agents as
to any matters that should be Incorpor
ated In the new system.
