Victoria, B. IC:; March; 11.— A native
•writer in the, Tung Wen Hu Pift> describee
the rout of the Chinese forces In the north.
General Chen Tsehlin, who commanded
the forces, took only thirty boxes of cart
ridges from the Nanking arsenal, saying
that the foreign devils would be sure to
■ flee<-at the- first discharge.of the .rifles of
his;rorcps; Viceroy Liv of Nanking or
dered that a lafge quantity of ammunition
be eeht after the army..
The army took up a position not far
horn Peking. " day the'horses were
turned out u> graze, and raising a commo
tion in. the pasture, a general stampede
took place. The aoWiers in camp believed
that the commotion heralded the approach
OT a foreign army. - Being utterly without
discipline, they-,waited for no : command,
! but began firing'indiscriminately into'the
cloud of,dust until their ammunition was
depleted, and then they fled.. ,
The general" with a few followers took
i'refuge-in an old temple. He was there
when the deputy, from the viceroy of Nan
king arrived with ihe additional ammunl
'tion. .- - This deputy and. party, believing
'that a battle had been, fought with the for
signers, fled ae* promptly as their comrades
had done.
The deserted general was at length dis
covered In the temple, bedraggled and
miserable and suffering with- hunger.
Gradually the scattered forces were par
tially reorganized and their leader pre
pared to follow the fortunes of the court,
but the empress dowager ordered him to
return to the south.

When released he seemed on the verge

Taken to 'his cell, where he remained till

Chicago, March 11.—Funeral services un

A. Morrill, his employer. Mr. Morrill,
though still suffering from a wound in the
back of the head, insisted on paying the
funeral for one who had been in bis em
ploy more than twenty years, though he
was informed of the arrival from. Cali
fornia of Correa's son to attend tt.e fu

In answer to the question why he should
wish to bury a man who deliberately at

Manila, March 11.—The Thirty-fifth vol
unteer regiment is about to sail for the
United 1 States.,
Replying to statements made in the
senate at Washington, General" Mac Arthur
says: WfHjj|^.T- _" '~_ __ I
While the nation yields men abundantly
for military service, our institutions are safe,
for .a- warlike spirit, .■which, alone creates, !
civilizes and defends a country, is essential to
, national perpetuity. These do,not mean an
overwhelming, army, menacing liberty amd
. peace; but the.. people should foster in the
public mind the memory of brilliant achieve
ments.' ". ,■ * :»v --' t
Warlike nations are not necessarily milli
lary nations. On the contrary, the mo:re
warlike, the spirit the less necessary it is to
liavi^ a large standing army, because the
able-bodied men are willing to fight on tlie
national demand.
