THE STATE FAIR
CROWDS EXCITED
Announcement of the Shooting of President
McKinley Caused Intense Feeling—Events
at the Grounds.
The crowds at the fair grounds last i
night divided their attention between the i
program and the McKinley bulletins. An- '
nouncements of the president's condition j
were made through the megaphone. When ,
the audience was informed that the presi
dent was resting easily and would recover,
a mighty cheer went up. The afternoon j
bulletins were not given to the crowds in i
the grand stand until a late hour. As soon j
as the announcement of the shooting was j
made, many left the stand. Excitement i
in the big crowd was intense and the re- j
marks on anarchists in general wen say- |
age.
The Race of the Day.
Yesterday afternoon's big state fair rack- \
ing event for the $5,000 purse contributed
by St. Paul business men was won by C. ■.
P. V.\, the little black mare owned by M. |
J. Sullivan of La Crosse, Wis. After the j
second heat the crowd had already I
awarded the race to "Fred the Kid." But {
the field of twelve horses scored many j
times for the third heat and "Fred the '
Kid" was thoroughly tired. He was soon
overhauled by C. F. \V., who crowded to i
the pole and retained the lead to the end. j
"Fred the Kid" rallied in the last quar- j
ter an.i after he had dropped to sixth '
place, pulled up to third while C. F. W. j
fought it out with Tags. .'
C. F. W.\s rival got a bad start in the j
fourth heat, and after a vain effort to i
forge to the front, was jogged by Ames, j
just Inside of the distance flag. The i
drivers of Kitty Powers, Tags and Shecan '
were fined $10 each for their apparent
effort to prevent a start until "Fred the
Kid" had been tired out.
The field was sent away for the final
heat with "Fred 'the Kid" in a pocket at
the rear of C. F. W.."s sulky, "lags was
close up to the leader and blocked any ef
fort Ames made to get out of his dilemma.
The horses maintained their positions to
the three-quarter pole when the pace be
gan to tell on Tags and he lagged. This
was the opportunity for which Ames had
been waiting and he started out to over
haul C. F. W. " The little black was
crowded by Hig-by and the two horses -,
turned into the stretch at a terrific clip.
The distance between the two horses grew
shorter at every step, and C. F. W. wen
by a margin so' nr.rrow that the specta
tors awaited the judge's announcement.
The result: ";•,"
