N e w York, Jan. 7.It is reported that negotiations'for ithe purchase of the Min neapolis & St. 'Louis are to be reopened by the Illinois Central. The common atock was one of the strong features of the stock market yesterday, advancing about five points on transactions of only - a few thousand shares. It is asserted that this Is partly due to renewed attempts to buy the road. It is not generally known, but i t is, nevertheless, quite true, that the market for Minneapolis & St. Louis stock has been held down by the pressure for sale of a considerable block held by the Patterson estate. It is known that , this stock has been steadily absorbed by inside Interests, aud it is now good opin ion that t h e . entire block has passed to prominent interests in the company who are cognizant of the plans 'that are in progress for t h e sale of the property. Now that t h e s e "holdings are oft* the market, as is believed to be the case,/ it would! not be surprising if the common -tock quickly advanced to at least 130. This could easily occur, as it is closely hold. M I L L E R ' S JURISDICTION I t C o v e r s O n l y tlie B u r l i n i g t o n S y s - t e m \ o N o r t h e r n Truffle. The Burlington road had 18 per tent of last year's grain traffic, the St. Paul 15 per cent, the Illinois Central aud Rock Island each 13 per cent, the North Western 9 per cent and the Santa Fe 5 per cent. To offset the decrease in grain traffic the western lines had a big increase in live stock traffic. MODERN FABLES. 'There is a fable of mythology that Hercu les once, on a journey, came to two roads. From one there came a person gaily dressel and beckoned him that way. Hercules said: What is your name?' 'My name is Pleasure, but my enemies call me Vice,' was the reply. From the other road came another, and Her cules said: "What is your name?' The an swer was: 'My name is Virtue the road is difficult, but the end is joy and peace.' Most people come often to that* point where Life's road divides. Small things lead us one way or another. Good judgment is required and well-informed minds are safest on such occa sions. Life is too serious to neglect such op portunities as are offered for fitting one's self for the pivotal points on life's battle ground.
