Joseph Reno, familiarly known a s "'Bow," who waa arrested yesterday a t his h o m e near the Exposition building, wa s taken back to Duluth to-day. He is "wanted" on a charge of having buncoed a stranger ou t of $180 in a -poker game. T h e prisoner denies the charge. Sophlra Grodland, who left her home at 1033 Sixteenth avenue SE, last "Wednesday, and started ddwn town to do some shoppjng, and who has not been seen since, was heard from by her anxious relatives this morning. She is visiting in a small town in North Da - kota. No explanation is given for her unan nounced departure from the city. A. H. Runge, former first assistant chief engineer of the fire department, and Charlie Poker, recently dropped from the department, have filed with the Fire Department Relief Association claims for pensions, and George Smith, T. J. Croak, Charles Glbbs and H. C. Lund, also dropped by Chief Canterbury this year, have put in total disability claims. The claims will be acted upon at the next meeting of the association, April 28. An ice floe which went on a rampage at Lake Calhoun Tuesday destroyed every wharf on the lake except that at the Minlkahda Club. Th e first crushed by the floe were near Spring Beach. When the wind shifted Wednesday, the floe moved upon Ewing's wharf at the foot of Thirty-fourth street and smashed it at the first onslaught. A portion of the hedgf Was a l i o destroyed. The Woods and Monk landings succumbed on Thursday. I. L. Hauser, a tea merchant from India, was In the twin cities yesterday on bis way to Chicago, where he goes to inspect the Ameri can office of his company. Mr. Hauser has been in the tea business in this country and in the orient for the past thirty-two years. H e says that the government is too lax re garding the quality of teas Imported from China and that tea is brought here and sold that would not be used by the lowest Chinese coolie. In going through the tunnel with a freight train, a great speed wa s at tained and efforts were made to slacken the rate, but the air brakes refused to work. The tunnel wa s unlighted and the train crew oould 41 and 43 6th St. S. Minneapolis, Minn. not se e what to do. Th e train ra n off t h e track and down a bank. Nordquist says that the accident would not have occurred had the tunnel been lighted o r had th e track been, provided with a safety switch. H e places his injuries a t ?20.000. Lena Link also brings suit for damages tor personal injuries against the Great Northern. She says that sh e wa s let off the Great North ern train at the St. Louis depot instead of being taken to the Union s station. It w a s dark, and hampered with much baggage s h e stumbled over a rail, injuring herself. She asks for $5,200. T n r n b l a d S l a y A p p e a l . The appraisers appointed by Judge Brooks to estimate the value of the Swan J. Turnblad property adjoining Loring park In their re port agree upon $13,000, o r it Mr. Turnblad. wishes to remove t h e building no w on the property, at $12,242. The former board of appraisers estimated the land to be worth $14,242. The report has been taken under the consideration of the court, and if it is ap - proved it is believed that Mr. Turnblad will appeal t o t h e supreme court.
