Inglewoo d Go . imtfm i T Both HT Phone s Scarcity of supplies at: the Minnesota mitts Is working a permanent advantage for Pacific coast lumber in the middle west. Within the past few months Hhe skirmish line- of the Pacific coast manu facturer. has been pushed farther east. The. white pine manufacturers have con fined their sales to a smaller area. With broken stocks and short supplies, their trade sentinels in the districts farther west hare 'been unarmed and driable to meet the invasion from the' coasl^ Thi.4 is a permanent advantage to the. western lumber maker. The consumer has tried his lumber and will want more of it. The retailer who has bandied nothing but white pine lumber for years has been forced to hny coast lumber in "order to make a pretense toward a complete stock. From now on the retailer in a large area must for the first time calculate.on giv ing coast lumber a place in his yard. This, and the announcement that the railroads - will give western , lumber a lower .rate to the middle west, is giving the Minnesota manufacturer no concern at present. He cannot fully meet-the de mand in a limited and choice territory, no part of which is very far. from his mill. As long as these ' - conditions l a s t he will meet nq trouble from any source. If hp can get^ the lumber he an sell at a good profit. But It the present demand, should diminish to a great extent, making it necessary for him again to enlarge his territory, he will find a foe entrenched on soil v he once regarded, entirely his own and one he will not easily dislodge at any point. L u m b e r f o r t h e Orient. Some of the larger coast mills, which have been on the firing line in the middle west for years have turned their attention to other trade in spite of the fact that the middle west offers them better oppor tunities than never before. The export trade, particularly with Japan, is attract ing them. They can dispose of all of their output in that quaver- at a much better profit. Consequently they have limited the operations of their represen tatives in this section of the country |nd given some of the smaller mills of Wash ington an. opportunity to increase their trade. This is. a condition of good times when the demand is great. With general prosperity and a rapidly developing west, this demand will continue. Should any thing occur -to lessen the pace at which the west is traveling there will be a live ly scramble for trade in this territory. It will tend to equalize things for the consumer, but not as satisfactory picking to the manufacturer. F r e e L u m b e r Sentiment". Sentiment among the retail dealers of the northwest is said to be multiplying rapidly In favor of free lumber. This is especially true of the retail lumber deal ers. They hold that the present short supplies, broken stocks, and high prices sbtsw t-bat tne tim nas come when tbe lumber across the line should be per mitted to coirsete in this market. The retail lumber dealer Tias been able to keep his stocks anywhere near complete only by begging lor supplies both from the west and the local mills. His sales have been curtailed and he feels that through the Inability of the manufacturer to meet conditions and the $2 tariff he has ['been unable to take advantage of his present splendid opportunity. A t - t h e ^present time the luicber at the head of the lakes goes to Buffalo to supply the eastern ^rade. With the duty off, the east would buy Canadian lumber and the Duluth sup plies would, be competing for sate i n t h e northwest-'and go to relieve the jpresent distress. The retailer believea he, wnuid, ^buy Ms lumber cheaper and the\?armi?r would have less reason for his vigorous kick on what he terms *xhprbitant prices. The growth of this sentiment among the retailers is important, as it will ulti mately have an effect upon the attitude of the northwestern delegation in congress. REVOLT AGAINST S T E E L TRUST Implement and machinery men are deeply interested in., the plana of the Deering Harvester company to make it s e l f independent of the steel trust. by manufacturin^Peering'pcompan g its ow steel andha iron sup plies. - The y s forti * fled itself. by a /big purchase of Iron ore lands in Minnesota and now announces that work on its steal plant at Chicago Is to foe pushed to completion rapidly. . The experience of the past -year has taught the manufacturers of fajm imple mints the asirabillty of being Independ ent of the trust. Supplies have been limited. The mills Of the United States Steel corporation have heen 1m far better shape to iturn out staple lines than to manufacture special patterns. This has interfered with the Implement trade. The plans of the trust recently announced 'show a disposition to improve the situa tion as rapidly as possible but the Deer-\ ing company is taking a new departure: and one that will be followed by' other agricultural implement concerns if they, can .secure, "the ore land*. The Great Northern, which is Interested, in hauling ore fco the head of the - lakes,| Is encour aging some manufacturers to buy iron properties. The fact that some of its plants are not# up to date and unable to manufacture the amount of special patterns desired Is one of the reasons for the big changes now being Inaugurated by the American Bridge company, a part of the trust. The bridge company's officials say that the big plant to J?e .erected at Economy, Pa., Is made necessary because the' present plants at Plttsljurg are not only unequal to the demand but are not up to date.. RAILROAD BUILDING Comparatively liffele railroad building is promised the northwest by the big sys tems this year. Northern Minnesota, which needs railroads more than any other section of the northwest at present, has the poorest prospects. The .Milwaukee has plans for one extension .in South Da kota outside of the short spur which i t , i s building from Eureka into southern North Dakota to connect with the North ern Pacific's construction in that region. In MHjfcesota and the Dakotas the Great Northern is comparatively inactive. There are three branches in northern North Dakota which the Great Northern has been threatening to build for two years. At the first of. the year the'Sop discussed plans for building into Bis marck, Aberdeen and to the Missouri river. The Bismarck extension is being completed, but the Aberdeen extension has been declared ..off for this year and nothing has so far been done on the ,Mis^ souri river line. The North-Western and Milwaukee are building In southern Min nesota. The North-Western is restricting its operations in South Dakota this y.ear and is said to have "entered into a. iiew deal with the Great (Northern since Jan. 1 by which the Hill road.will, hot extend to Black Hills or even-as far as Pierre.
