prt Ail*??. BoK Normannaheimen WATERPROOF RnjY&\u-^hg-5'(2 415 to 419 Nicollet Ave. IN MYSTERY'S REALM Capt. Amundsen Going to Wrest More Secrets From the Arctic. Agitation in Sweden Favoring Na- . tional Exhibit at St. Louis Exposition. In May Captain Roald Amundsen, with a crew of seven men, will steer the Gjora, lor the Arctic regions. He will seek to relocate the magnetic pole, which is some what shtfty. and has not been accurately located since 1831. He will have with him the most modern of self-registering mag netic and meteorological instruments and will chart the coasts he cruises by as well as maki ng geological explorations. The expedition i* planned to consume four years, but will be provisioned for six years. The first station will be estab lished in Lancaster sound, where a part of the crew will be stationed to take obser vations. About $25,000 has been raised for this venture, of which King Oscar has per sonally contributed $2,500 and the, Royal Geographical Society of England $500. Captain Amundsen is only, 30 years^ old end has made one successful expedititfh in the Antarctic regions. His second in command will be Lieutenant" Godfred Hansen. 27 years of age. The other mem bers will be Anton Lund and' Helmer Han sen, skilled harpoonists. Sergeant Peter Rlstveldt. machinist Gustav J. Wiik.as Ktant: a.nd Andrew Pedersen. steward. The eighth member will be a physician of scientific, bent. The Gjoa is a small vessel but is not a Stranger to Arctic dangers and has prov en herself a stanch little craft. Tt has, however, been greatly strengthened and is well equipped in every direction. The scientific instruments alone cost. $5,000. Captain Amundsen has been planning the xpedition for four years past and the de tail are doubtless very complete. THEY CAN'T AGREE Norway Stubborn and Sweden Cross Over Union Matters. The liberal party of Norway has decided to continue the agitation for complete in dependence, and demands the Immediate establishment of a Norwegian consular service and will demand a continuance of the work for an independent foreign ser vice, separate from Sweden. As might be expected. Sweden is but Illy satisfied with such a program. It was hoped that when Sweden conceded the point regarding a separate Norwegian consular service, there would be no fur ther demand for a separate diplomatic service. The Swedes in the main consider that Norway is ungrateful and should be content with a joint foreign department whose head should be either a Norwegian or a Swede. MUST EXHIBIT AT ST. LOUIS The Swedish Export Journal Makes a 8trong Plea. In the last number of Swedish Export n earnest, plea is made for a compre hensive exhibit of Swedish wares at the St. Louis exposition in 1005. Your choice for only 95c Hammar of the export association supple ments the plea with an article on the benefits derived from participation in the world's fair at Chicago in 1893. All this fair Sweden had a magnificent building of the most striking architecture which at tracted the attention of every visitor. Here-were displayed Swedish cutlei'y. porcelain. - goldsmiths' work and the products of the paper mills and other in dustries. In addition. Swedish art was splendidly represented in the big art gal lery. While Swedish manufacturers can ex pect but little .consideration in the Ameri can market on account of the high tariff, it must be remembered .that the exposi tion will be visited by thousands from other countries and it behooves Sweden not only to participate but on such a scale as will command attention. V. J. GUTGESELL, Manager. Sultan Wants Norsemen. Cherif Pasha, the Turkish minister to Sweden and Norway, has requested King Oscar to select two Swedish army officers ,to assist in the reorganization of the gen darmerie in the vilayets of Kassovo, Mon astir and Salonica. The appointment will be for three years and the salaries will amount to about 10.000 kroner per year* The king has consented. A similar request has been made to the Norwegian army departme nt thru the foreign minister. The conditions are the same. Six officers have made applicaa tion for the places. Ekstsm Charters the Frlthjof. Dr. Otto Ekstam, who will lead the scientific expedition to Novaja Semlja, has leased the Norwegian steam whaler Frithjof, commanded by a veteran sailor. Captain J. Kjeldsen. The Frithjof is tried, and ..true, and,.it is a historic vessel besides. It carried the Wellman expedi tion in its "dash to the pole" the Kolthoff expedition to the eastern coast of Green land, the Norwegian expedition to Spitz bergen in 1901 and was used by the Bald win-Ziegler parties in establishing a de pot on Greenland and at Franz-Josef's land. Bergen's Labor Conflict. Bergen's strike by the iron and metal workers is likely to become a serious af fair, as the strikers are organizing for a protracted conflict. The national union is preparing to raise funds and the metal workers of Sweden and Denma rk have promised aid. By the figures presented by the strike committee it appears that the wages in Bergen are from 4 to 11 ore per hour lower than in the other cities of Norway. The average is 30.79 ore and 22.49 for helpers. The increase asked for is only from 2 to 3 ore. Better .and Better Fishing. It is a great satisfaction to learn that as the Ashing season in Norway advances the better it becomes. This is particular ly true of cod. ' Thus up to April 7 Lofo ten reported its catch as already equal to the whole catch of 1900. The fish is not of the best quality, however, and the supply of cod liver oil will be exceedingly small, but buyers are more numerous than ever before, which should presage good prices. The reports along the whole coast are quite rosy. Surprising Emigration Figures. Despite the heavy emigration from Nor way last year which reached a total of 28,000 the indications are that it will be much heavier this year. During the first quarter the figures were 7.703 as com pared with 4.780 for last year, and if the proportion is maintained 40.000 will leave Norway in 1903,- exceeding all former records. Rich Rutlle Deposits. Rich deposits of rutile have been discov ered near Narvik. Norway, and operations will begin next month. The quantity is reported to be excellent and will easily command 1 kr. per kilogram, which mea ns wealth for some. one. The mine is only fifty feet from the sea and the harbor is excellent for loading. Oscar to Open Some More. The royal opening of Ofsten railway, which crosses the northern parts of Swe den and Norway, will occur in July. King Oscar and his party will leave Stockholm on June 28. and after visiting the new fortifications at Boden. will proceed to Narvik. Less Beer Made. Temperance people in Norw ay are re joicing over the reports of the production of beer in that country, which show a decrease, of 15 per cent. Similar condi tions also prevail in Denmark, the de crease being about the same. Need No Furth er Aid. In its official report of April 20% on the distress in northern Sweden 'the * central relief committee says the funds at the disposal of the committee are sufficient, provided the growth of the pasturage is not retarded. Famous In Her Day. Magdalena Thorsen, the authoress, died at Copenhagen a fortnight ago at the age of 83. She was born in Denmark, but her literary work was begun in Nor way. Several of her plays were produced in the theatei-s of Scandinavia. Another Fall of Nobel Prizes. The trustees of the Nobel fund report that there will be available 706,787 kr. for the 1903 prizes. Each of the five prizes will thus be worth 141.357.57 kr., or prac tically $40,000. The awards will be made next fall. -. . . ._- , - -:.-:: : -An Earthly Paradise. Professor university has just published the first volume of his work, on the geography and geology of Minnesota. It is, the first book of the kind ever written aHd Is intended for use in the upper grades and. high schools. Accordingly, it is written in a very simple style, and yet is comprehen sive. It treats only of conditions within the state boundaries, but the author says that what is true of Minnesota is generally true of the entire middle west. The first volume is merely an exhaustive physical geography, of the state, and the two vol umes to follow will treat of the economic value of the northern lakes and forests, and will be for use in colleges. The chief feature of the work is the collection of excellent illustrations, which were furnished "by Professor MacMillan, botanist. Professor Nachtrieb. biologist, and by ? S. Hibbard of the state geologi cal society.
