LOVER TAKES LUCRE Strange and Weird Story Told by Mrs. Julia Klein of St. Louis. Hypnotist and Fortune Teller Got Her in Their Power and Stole $7,000. Chicago, June 24 Enticed half -way across the continent by protestations of love, only to meet a man who hypnotized, drugged and robbed her, Is the story told by Mrs. Julia Klein, of St Louis. Incidentally she has secured the arrest of Charles Marco, a Hungarian, educated and polished. Marco protested his inno cence, but Mrs Klein insisted she was not mistaken. H e will be given a hear ing in Justice Sheldon's court July 2. The women's story is one of strange ad ventures, dealing with hypnotism, a soothsayer in San Francisco, fortune-tell ing, with the accompaniment of burning incense and her own strange presenti ment that the man was faithless. The complainant, who is the owner of two restaurants in St. Louis, arrived in Chicago Friday, and yesterday she ap - peared with her attorney in Justice Shel don's court and swore out a warrant for Marco's arrest on the charge of larceny. Mrs. Klein alleged that Marco made love to her nearly a year ago, and that after he had gained her affections he went to San Francisco. "From San Francisco Marco wrote me letters filled with terms of endearment," said Mrs Klein. "He asked me to sell out my restaurants and go out to him he said he could not do without me H e said I could get rich in a short time. I was not entirely satisfied as to his mo - tives, yet there was samething about him' that I could not resist When he told me to do a thing I felt some strange power Influencing me I was in his power before he left me Even when he commanded me in his letters, I yielded to his wishes. Drew Out Her Money. "I sold my restaurants, went to the foank where I had my savings deposited, withdrew a little more than $7,000 and '.went to San Francisco I resolved while on the train to evade him, but when he met me at the depot in San Francisco and told me 'to follow' I realized that I was in his power. "He took me to the house of a fortune teller. They kept perfumed woods burn- . ting in my room and made uncanny noises at night I often imagined some one was moving about m my room at night Mar jfr co told me the fortune teller was 'all pow ^erful' and knew everything. r* "One morning Marco gave me some thing which caused me to become dizzy. i The liquid had been drugged. The the X fortune teller called me from my room -* and began telling my fortune with cards. I was attracted to my room by a noise, and I was Just in time to see Marco hur- , rylng out of a window. J., June 24.When counsel representing the various interests in the action to obtain a receiver for the United States Shipbuilding company reassembled to-day before Circuit Judge Andrew Kirk patrick it was the general belief that the court might reach a decision this after noon. Charles L. Corbin of Jersey City, resum ing the argument for the defense, de clared that the reorganization plan recom mended by the committee of which George R Sheldon is chairman was the only loophole of safety in the present con dition of the corporation's financial af fairs. Addressing himself to the question of insolvency Mr. Corbin declared that the allegations contained in the bill and the statements of opposing counsel purporting to prove the inability of the corporation to pay its maturing liabilities, were based on hearsay evidence. H e insisted that the corporation was solvent within the mean ing of the statutes, and that under fed eral laws the court could have no jurisdic tion unless It found incontrovertable evi dence of both fraud and insolvency. In solvency without fraud removed jurisdic tion into the state courts As to the possibility of carrying on pres ent contracts under a receiver, Mr. Cor bin contended innumerable difficulties would arise, any one of which would re sult in great financial loss H e was in sistent that government contracts now in hand should be completed without inter ference. GOOD THING TO KNOW If Your Time Lock Doesn't Work Use a Sledge Hammer. New York Sun Special Service. St Louis, June 23 The vault door in the United States subtreasury has been opened after having remained closed for three days owing to the failure of the time lock to work. In the vault was $35,000,000. General Farrar, the subtreasurer, wired the New York makers of the time lock the predicament he was in and asked that an expert be sent at once to open the vault. He received a telegram telling him to take a block of wood and with the aid of a sledge hammer beat the door repeatedly, as the hands of the clock had evidently caught. This was done and soon a click was heard, the handle of the vault door was turned and It readily opened. ^sz^i^MW^ THE MINNEAPOLIS JOUENAL Millinery Greatly Reduced We quote prices that are ridiculously small when compared with what the same has sold for earlier in the season. New York, June 24.Death has dis closed the secret romance of Walter Will son Watrous, sportsman and society lead er It was not until the return of his bride with his body, yesterday, that it was generally known there had been a third marriage in the Hunt-Wattrous mar riage divorce series that for the last four years has surprised Ne w York society. Mr. Watrous died rather unexpectedly at the Marlborough house, Atlantic City. With him at the time of his death were his bride and his sister, Mrs. Spencer. It had been supposed that since his wife ob tained a divorce and married Richard H. Hunt, he had been leading a life of re tirement, and the first public intimation of the fact that he had been married again came in the notice of his death, which read "Walter Willson Watrous, beloved hus band of Katherlne B , in the forty-fourth year of his age " Henry Willson, one of Mr. Watrous* partners in the lumber firm of Willson, Adams & Co , said- "I have no knowl edge of the fact that Mr. Watrous had married again, tho the notice of his death describing him 'as the beloved husband of Katherine B ,' appeared in nearly all the newspapers.
