Amendments to the compulsory f a Paul in the holidays . specia co mittee will consider the fact that the present law, requiring children to at tend school between the ages of 8 and 16 years, affords too many excuses The teachers will probably recom mend that the law be changed so that all children from 8 to 14 years of age will be required to attend school, un less prevented by poverty or by mental or physical disability. Another reported project of the Educational association is to charge admission to all the meetings during Its annual session. The suggestion made is that persons not members of the society be asKed to pay $1 each for badges admitting the holder to the general sessions, the evening lectures, etc. Some teachers, however, argue that the public school system is for the benefit of all, and that the public has an implied right to attend, without charge, the general meetings of the association and to hear the informal discussions. But a fee might reason ably be demanded for the privilege of hearing paid lectures. Furs. Furs. Now for Furs. The Plymouth Fur Mfg. Section. P J. is informed, was 1896, the next will be 1904, BO , ,. . ,. _ , - - that the child born Feb 29, 1892, will | be going to grammar school on hisout second birthday at the end of next February. According to the Gregorian cal endar, which we have followed for a century and a half, all years are leap years that are exactly divisible by four, except thps$ penturial years which- are not exaqf.ly divisible by 400 The addit^ijal day is needed occasionally to keep -the calendar year in harmony with fchej actual tinj'1 the earth takes 4n- -moving about the sun. i - The year 1896, as a number, could be divided exactly by four. The 1900 could be divided by four, but this was a centurial year that could not be dividetteexactly by 400 If "P. J L " will wait patiently un til 2000 A. PROMISES i "We are in hi case now and .be- fore we are thru w,4h it there will be some sensational disclosures I miss my guess if some other people do not get into trouble." This statement, made yesterday by Hjalmar Eckstromer, indicted with Fred Ayers for attempted extortion from J- H. Gugler, indicates that there will be more revelations in connection with the Gugler Electrical Manufac turing company's fire. Both defendants have pleaded not .guilty, and have been released on $500 bondi. A\ers, a well-known local at torney, laughs at the charge against him and denies evei* having any hand in an attempt to extort money from Gugler as a price for not accusing him of pouring water on his stock after the Gugler fire for the purpose of swindling the insurance company. Eckstromer asserts that his defense will develop the real facts of the water-pouring episode H e says he can show that water was poured over the stock left in the Gugler plant after the fire and will show by whom and for what purpose the work was done. Evangelism was well considered by the Minneapolis Baptists yesterday and to-day at the Central Baptist church Rev Dr A T Fowler of Calvary church said that the necessity for a revival was shown by the religious indifference of modern life. Tne speaker believed that if history were taken as a guide other great revivals were to be expected Some authorities be lieve a revival will cpme in a social re generation, others in ethical enlighten ment, in a rediscovery of the kingdom of heaven, or an awakening to individual re sponsibility The speaker believed that it would be a revival of the presence Of Jesus Christ This morning Rev B. R Kennan pre sided and the speakers were Rev. G F. Holt on "Plans and Methods," and Rev. n E Ferris of TJA Crosse, Wis on "The Message Required " This afternoon the presiding officer is Rev H P Whidden and the speakers Rev. TOGE HIM VBZfr^- President of the Retail Heat Deal" ers' Association Says Meat's , - Cheap Enough to Eat. Prices Have Been Falling in Past Three Months and Are low. f "There never was a time within my memory when meats were so cheap as they are now People can live on meats cheaper than they can any thing else, and as far as local condi tions are concerned they are buying more meats and at cheaper priceB than at any other large center in the country, and thata s why Minneap olis is one oh f the biggest meat con- o n t e m pi- as my experience has gone, and, lo cally meats are selling cheaper than they have for a long time. '"In the last three months, for in stance, porterhouse and sirloin steaks have dropped from 15 cents to 12% cents a pound, pork chops which were selling at 15 and even 17 cents a pound have come down to 12%c, mutton chops, sold at 15 cents three months ago, are now sold at 10 cents, pot roast has dropped from 11 cents 8, corn beef from 5 to 3 cents, round steaks from 12% to 10, .and whole hams from 15 to 12% cents. "What the packers may be doing to the feeders I cannot say, because we do not buy live beef and we really pay small attention to prices in the live stock market But I have noticed no tendency to 'squeze' the retailers and I th , eftf f y av \ a such tendency. The packers, while to get the business and are not liable to kill the goose which lays the golden egg And this goose, by the way, probably yields only a fair profit "If the public is being held up in anv p-lace it is in the markets of the outlying districts and in the country I had occasion last week to visit a Red Kiver valley town not reached by the combine, at least not to the extent of ^hipping in fresh meat, and I found that, prices there on country killed meats were fully 20 per cent higher than they are hejre This disparity could not be occasioned by a differ ence in freight rates, making prices that much higher in the surrounding region, because the packers can lay down meats in Crookston, whjch place they serve, almost as cheap as fchev can here. "I am not championing the cause of the packers' combine and it prob ably does a great amount of injustice somewhere. There is nothing in my position or my business associations which would prevent my expressing an adverse opinion of the combine if I had one, but in this particular of retail prices the combine cannot be regarded as an element harmful to the public." that have done it before since"*the dayS'* of good Queen "SENSATIQR Eckstromer Hints at Startling Dis closures in Connection With the Gngler Fire. ^ Special Sale Men's Fur Coats.
