In 1875 the Total Earnings Were About $503,000,000It Was Fif teen Years Before Another $500,- 000,000 Was Added Ten Years Be fore the Next, and Only Four Years Before the Fourth. Our railroad systems will earn this year In gross $2,000,00.0,000. This Is the estimate of the Wall Street Jour nal. I adds. "The last report of the interstate commerce commission gives the gross earnings of our railroads for the fis cal year ending June 30 last as $1,890,150,000. A increase of only 6 per cent would raise that total to above the $2,000,000,000 mark. "The record of earnings compiled by the Journal indicates that, up to the present time there has been an increase of more than that percentage above the same period last year, which shows that it is reasonable to expect that the gross earnings will this year be in exce ss of two billion dollars 'We give below a table showing the mileage and gross earnings of our railroad systems at intervals of five years since 1875. \er Mileage 1S75 71 750 1880 82146 1885 123 280 3890 157,076 185 178,154 1000 191 862 UlOo 20M57 "It may be noted that it took fifty ears to reach the first $500,000,000 mark, fifteen years to attain the sec ond, ten years to pass the third and but four years to round out the fourth. Nothing more strikingly illustrates the rapid growth of this country dur ing the last quarter of a century." Twm city railroads which operate in Wisconsin are having their books investigated by John W Thomas, rail road commissioner for Wisconsin. Mr. Thomas has assistants and expects to spend several days on the work. The investigation of accounts began in October I is similar to that con ducted by the Minnesota commission in this state Figures as to receipts, expenses and other operations are be ing verified I regaid to the abolition of the gross earnings tax in Wisconsin for the ad valorem system, Mi. Thomas said I will be more than two years be fore the ad valbrem tax system will be effective The matter will go into the courts and there will be protracted litigation before the system devised by the legislature is in practical working effect, in the meantime the state and the railways have agreed to continue the present graduated gross earnings tax system Railway property is to be taxed as other property The tax commission is establishing the valua tions and with reference to railway se curities will, apportion the amount to be taxed by Wisconsin on^a mileage or earnings'basis. SALARIED MAN O NOT? Questions Raised With Great North ern Conductor's Committee. The general committee of Great Northern conductors is holding its biennial session in St Paul The chief question for discussion is the appoint ment of a permanent salaried chair man, such as other railroad organiza tions have at headquarters. Conserv ative conductors are against the prop osition as the organization has gen erally got what it wanted from the road Those who favor the plan say it does not mean more demands, but a full investigation of matters. The conductors will be in sessi on several das. PHARMACY LAW CASE Should Hospital Drug Department Considered a Drug Store?
