RACE OF RAIIiROADS Great Northern May Yet Beat Soo in Extension Work. The .Great Northern may beat the Soo thru the White Earth reservation yet. When news of the proposed Glenwood extension came out the Great Northern threw out surveying parties. Later the Soo announced the continued extension to Emerson. Now the announcement that work on the extensions of the Great Northern from Pelican Rapids and Thief River Falls would begin early in the spring indicates that the Hill system may beat the Soo. The Pelican Rapids extension will be the longest tapping a fine country* It will run in an almost straight line north and sjightly east for 108 miles, crossing the Northern Pacific main line west at Lake Park and the Great Northern's Fosston extension at Mc intosh. The terminus of the line will be in Marshall county, near the west ern border, and close to an. east and west center line. For part of the distance it will cut across territory the Soo seeks to con trol with its Glenwood extension. For the rest of the. distance It. will cut thru territory in which it will have no competitor except the Northern Pa cific. North of the Fosston line it will have on the east a country entirely lacking railway facilities, except for the Fosston line, and on the west there is nothing but the Great Northern's own line to Thief River Falls. The other extension will run due north from Thief River Falls to 1 Roseau, with possibility of a Winnipeg connection thru Sprague by way of the Canadian Northern. This, line will run thru Marshall county and will open parts of Roseau and Kittson counties which have no railway facilities. The settlement has' been heavy in the territory and will increase as the railroad priv ileges are increased. IiOOKING FOR BIG TRADE Traffic Man Tells of Prospects on the Coast.
