BRIDE-ELECT MN1SHED PROSPECTIVE BRIDEGROOM HADN'T LICENSE FEE AND SHE WASN'T GOING TO PAY FO MARRYING HIM. A tall. lank, rffW-boned young countryman slouched in front of. the marriage license counter in the county clerk of court's office yesterday. He had the air of one rather ashamed of his position and yet determined to make the best of a bad business. Behind him some four or Ave Daces 00'.go. 39o 49c 59c ,69c 5c stood a little, middle-aged woman who made an unsuccessful effort at appear ing to be a disinterested party. This thih-lipped little lady was a type of the not young women who wear black silk mits and little black bonnets tied tightly over carefully smoothed front hair and are in the habit of having their^ own way. "I'm here fur a marriage license," explained the uncomfortable bride groom. "All right I'm here to give it to you," .was Marriage License Expert Switzer's characteristic rejoinder, and he produced his books and papers and set about doing the necessary writing. When about to complete his task, the clerk was interrupted by the query: "Say, how much do you charge fur them things?" "Two dollars is the fee." '"Two dollars? Why, I thought it was only $1, and that's all I brought with me." Grand Re Women's fine kid and box calf Shoes, worth $2.00, goat... You can't get a license here for anything less than a two-dollar William." The prospective bridegroom flushed to the roots of his hair. He took a minute inventory of the keys, nails, small change and other bric-a-brac with which his pockets were filled. "Well, I ain't got it, that's all," he sighed, at length. Then suddenly he turned to the little lady. "Say, Manda, got any money?" he asked. "What's that, James? Money?" she asked. "Now fur land sakes what do you want of money? No, I hain't got no money. Hain't you got money of your own?" "Wellwell, you see I didn't know the license was going to b$ so much," sheepishly explained the would-be husband. "Very well and good, then, William. Reor- Kf* ganization sale SGHUMANN-HEINK RECITAL The name of Schumann-Heink is synonym of success. She is a marvel of achievement, a superb example of what genius, brains- and,-. an indomitable per severence can, accomplish. By her own ef forts she has, reached the pinnacle of fame. As a woman, gracious and wholesome as a mother, loving and faithful as a wife, tender and solicitous as an artist, of con summate power and skill she challenges the admiration and affection of mankind. It is no wonder, then, that at her recital at the First Baptist church last evening, every seat was taken and the walls lined in places three-deep with meager listeners. There were no captious critics. Every listener was selfrpledged to do honor to the prima donna. The program opened with an aria from "Mitrane" by Rossi, an exceedingly diffi cult thing that taxed the artistic powers of the singer. Her Voice unfortunately was not at its best. "My Heart at Thy Dear "Voice," the famous Saint Saens aria, was surpris ingly well sung under the hampering con ditions. Rarely have its passion and sub tle treachery received such a dramatic arid all-satisfying interpretation. j^0^:l: The "Rienzi" recitative and aria were sung still better, but'it remained for the, closing group of songs to bring put th6 singer's full powers. Schubert's "Death and the Maiden", was powerfully effective, and Liszt's "The Three Gypsies," dis played her wonderful range of voice, and versatility of art: It was, however, in the Hugo Wolf "Heimweh" that the cli max of the evening was reached. Wolf was a young German whose God-given genius was too powerful. His life paid the penalty, and the asylum opened its portals to him before the end came Tot -a 10c A 2 for day there is scarcely a song program given in Germany that does not contain one or more of his songs. The "Heim weh" is the brightest jewel. of them all, and the tender pathos that'dominates all the Wolf lieder, finds its culminating note in this song. Schumann-Heink sang it divinely. The great song and the great singer were wedded and the spontaneous ovation it received showed the apprecia tion of the vast: audience.. Josephine Hartniann accompanied the prima donna but indifferently well, and in her first solo number, the Chopin Fantasie in F-minor was scarcely convincing. In the Hungarian Rhapsody, the inevitable twelfth by the way,' Miss Hartmann .was, much better and her execution was very creditable this was especially true of her runs and trills, and her interpretation w\* intelligent and satisfactory. Last night Schumann-Heink was here. To-night her successor with the Grau 1 orces,t Olive' Fremstad, will be heard. Umiror Howar^ Boardman.:PnarHmfl
