An Editor Has to Put Up 30 Marks for Participating in the Singing of What Was Described by the Court as an "Incendiary" Song. The singing of Danish songs is a crime in Schleswig, having been so declared by a high court in Berlin, which sustained the action of the Schleswig courts in fining Editor les sen 30 marks for participating in the singing of "Hole Nord." This song was defined by the judge in the court of the first instance as incendiary. Under the law of July 12, 1865, the singing of Danish national songs of an inflammatory character was prohib ited. The wise, judge held that the song, tho probably in itself not in tended by the author to have any political significance, nevertheless could be construed as an appeal to contest Germanism. Jessen insisted that this old law was repealed by the Prussian administration, which guar anteed citizens of Schleswig free thought, and moreover he maintained that the song itself was not incendiary, which anyone knowing the song would agree to. Jessen was overruled by the court, likewise by the superior court, and finally by the court of last resort in Berlin. DOINGS ON GOTHLAND Berlin Papers Fear That England Seeks the Island. Berlin papers profess to be alarmed over what they declare is the evident intention of Great Britain to gain pos session of Gothland. These fears find no echo in Sweden, tho realizing that the island would provide an excellent base in a war against Russia, having many excellent harbors. Sweden has mobilized the reserves and militia in Gothland, and with good results, as the troops appeared promptly and in good spirits. Sev eral commands, particularly of cav alry, will be transported over from the mainland. These warlike prepara tions are not for the purpose of meet ing a British seizure, but to guard against unfavorable demonstrations from Russia. There is much activity in the Swed ish navy. ANOTHER "FOOIj-KHiUER" Peter Nissen Invents a Novel Craft for Arctic Waters. Peter Nissen, the Dane who made several trips over Niagara falls in his "fool-killer" some years ago, is show ing an odd-looking craft which he says will take him to the north pole some day. In reality, the new "boat" is a huge canvas bag, .made water-proof. In side it has many ribs, and from these ribs, which hold the bag in shape, spokes extend to common centers, sup porting a shaft which runs the whole length of the craft. From this shaft will hang a basket in which the nav igator will sit, steering his vehicle by moving from one end of the shaft to the other. He will depend upon wind for motive power.
