RAILROADS: GRAND TRUNK MC HINTS AT BATTLE OFFICIAL SAYS LINE IS TIRED OF GROUNDLESS CHARGES,, If It Has to Take Blame It Will Get More of the GameSame Official Says American Roads, Not the In terstate Commission, Are to Blame. Special to The Journal.^'**' New York, May 10.Grand Trunk people here refer with some bitter ness to the traffic situation in a-nd around Chicago, the interstate com merce commission and the attitude of the American trunk lines between Chicago and New York. It appears that the position of the Grand Trutik is not pleasing to the other trunk lines, and efforts have been made to make things more unpleasant for that for eign railroad. An official of the road, on his way from New York to Buffalo, after a conference relative to the throwing out of the lake-and-rail rates on the trunk lines, said: "The improvements that have been made on Grand Trunk during the past two or three years have bettered the position of that road to such an ex tent that we hope and intend to take a place in the Chicago-seaboard traffic higher than the place we occupied be fore. What is the result? The Ameri can lines have seen that we Intend to bid for traffic more boldly than be fore. They know perfectly well that we can cut the rates from Chicago to tidewater nearly 50 per cent if we like, and still make money on. low-grade stuff. In other words, the margin of profit has grown on Grand Trunk on thru business from Chicago to Port land. "We have obeyed their rules be cause Grand Trunk does not want to disorganize the freight situation, not because we have to. In return we have at the present moment the pleas ure of fighting against rebates paid to our shippers by at least one Ameri can road I could name if I liked, and of being constantly accused of sharp tricks at Chicago and elsewhere. I'll admit that we have shaded the law in Chicago in more than one respect. In each and every case we have done it because we had to do it to keep busiT ness that we had had for years. This agitation about switching charges paid to some of the big shippers is a sam-r, pie. If the investigation is carried thru it will be discovered, perhaps,, who started this evasion of the law. It will be discovered that it was not the Grand Trunk. "The interstate commerce commis sion is a good thing, and we have found its rulings fair, if only they were literally enforced. Of course, they make mistakes, and the law will generally set them right. On the whole, however,. they try to do the square thing and they succeed fairly well. It isn't the commission I am kicking about. It is the railroads. "I don't want to go on record as saying that there is going to be trou ble, but I don't mind promising that Grand Trunk will not forever go on getting the name without the game." EASTERN RATES SHAKY Soo line's Cut and Brokers' Tickets the Cause. The Soo line is a figure in the pos sible Chicago and eastern passenger, rate war. Another factor is the ticket broker. The Soo has based eastern rates on a $2 one-way rate from Mln=. neapolis to Chicago, and the tickefci brokers, with a lot of return stubs of the $3 rate tickets from Chicago can do a lot of harm. It is believed that a major portion of the travel from Chicago on the $3 rate is round trip business and that not over 150 tickets will fall to the scalpers. ]?ut the Soo: rate will remain in force until May 26, thirteen days after the Chicago tickets expire. The Soo has cut the tariff to all points east of Mackinac $6, making the rate to New York $18 and $20 to Boston, $21, instead of $29, and to Montreal, $18.65, instead of $27.50. A passenger official says: "It all depends on how many tickets the brokers have been- able to secure. If they have gotten a large supply of the return cheap rate tickets you can look for the bitterest struggle between the MinneapoliSrChicago lines that has ever been waged in the northwest. The five Chicago lines that did not secure any of the $3 excursion busi ness are sore, and it will take but lit tle provocation to start trouble." 'FRISCO RAILROAD DEAL Gets Control of Two Other Lines New Securities Issued. New York, May 10.To pave the way for its renting scheme and at the same time for funding part of its floating debt and unifying its system, the St. Louis & San Francisco railroad, with the Chicago & Eastern Illinois, has signed a contract, according to the Herald, whereby the St. Louis, Mem phis & Southeastern railroad will ac quire all the capital stock of the St. Louis & Gulf railroad and will itself be owned by the 'Frisco. The plan involves the retirement of securities aggregating $12,530,000 and the issu ance of new securities aggregating $26,500,000. SEEK TO FORCE CLAIMS Injunction Secured to Prevent Trans fer of Washburn Road. Speoial to The Journal. Bismarck, N. D., May 10.General W. D. Stevens appears as attorney for Patterson and Philbrick. WELL IMPROVE ROAD Soo Line likely to Better Washburn Road. E. Pennington, general manager of the Soo line, will go to Bismarck soon to look over the Soo's purchase,, the Washburn road. The line, will probably be improved imme diately. It is expected that W. Derrick will be superintendent in connection with the management of the extension from Hankinson to Bis marck. The general offices, shops and roundhouse at Bismarck will, probably be abolished. 8 .V McCall Patterns, Best Always. S gf BAU-BOAD NOTES. ^vy 3. O.
