Seven miles north of Melita, Man., the residence of A. T. Brodenck, man ager of the Union Bank of Canada, was struck by lightning and wrecked. A woman and two children in the house escaped uninjured. Omaha, Neb., Aug. 19.Prominent Christian Scientists at a convention today declared faith an effective means of stopping runaways. Mrs. A. C. Wakeley related her ex perience. A driverless team of horses dashed down a hill. On a rear seat was the daughter of a wealthy ranch man. At the foot of the hill piles of granite paving stones blocked the path of the galloping horses. To onlookers it seemed that the child would be dashed to death. "I stood in the street and gave the people's fear treatment," declared Mrs. Wakeley. "You all know how those horses became gentle in an instant." Omaha, Neb., Aug- 19.Two hun dred passengers on the southbound Union Pacific express owe their lives to the courage and presence of mind of 10-year-old Claude Nickerson of Valparaiso, who discovered that a long trestle was in flames. He ran two miles to notify the station men at his home town. The express was brought to a stand still by danger signals, and the bridge fell while the trainmen were alight ing to ascertain the reason of the de lay.
